After following the Prep Guide over the past 60 hrs. , I seem to have made no headway . Ad-Aware/Spybot tells me that my machine is infected w/ the following: 180Solutions.SearchAssistant (and variants), 2020Search, CoolWWWSearch.Leftovers, Smitfraud.c & Smitfraud.C.gp, SecondThought.STC Loader, Zango, Hyperlinker, SpyHunter, and Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.TaskManager (whew!).

I am running BitDefender9.5 (up-to-date) as my firewall/AV/SpamFilter, et.al., But I still got bamboozled.

Again, I have followed the Prep Guide instructions to the letter, but the files seem to self-replicate after deletion! Yikes! Here is the HijackThis Log:

Hope you can help. I have never posted to a forum before, so forgive my ignorance if I do not seem to follow the established protocol/etiquette straight away. BTW, Couldn't I just nuke my drive any reinstall from my backup? Thanx.

Hi there,

Methinks you're silly, but here we go.......

Please print these instructions or copy them to Notepad (or another word processor), and save it for easier reference. This is because we will be in Safe Mode during the fix and you won’t be able to access the Internet to view these instructions.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition and save that file to your desktop.

This is a 30-day trial of the program -- This means that after 30 days the "background guard" protection will be de-activated. However, this version can continue to be manually updated and used as an on-demand scanner forever.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the setup program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need to run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the top of the main screen select the "Update" icon, then under the "Manual update" section click the "Start update" button.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed (the progress bar will display "Update successful!") select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the "Settings" screen:
    • Click on "Recommended actions" -> select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports:" -> select "Do not automatically generate reports".
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Please do NOT run a scan yet!
Next, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Reboot your computer.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but just before the Windows icon appears, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, reboot the computer and try again.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the "Safe Mode" menu item, and then press "Enter".
Navigate to and delete the following folders (if they exist):

C:\Program Files\180searchassistant
C:\Program Files\180solutions
C:\Program Files\zango
C:\Program Files\seekmo
C:\Program Files\180search assistant
C:\Program Files\stc
C:\Program Files\Sysmnt
C:\Program Files\Advanced Registry Optimizer
C:\WINDOWS\PerfInfo
C:\WINDOWS\FLEOK
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Advanced Registry Optimizer
C:\Documents and Settings\Bennett\Application Data\Sammsoft
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\XPdefender

Then please run a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab. Click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select the "Apply all actions" button, AVG Anti-Spyware will then display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
    • Next select the "Save Report" button at the bottom.
    • Then select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand corner of the screen and save it as a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important!).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system normally into Windows. Please post the contents of the AVG Anti-Spyware report in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
Please also let me know how it's running now.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Hello Tea,

I'm back from the frontlines. Whew! Anyway, this machine is running mo' betta now, thanx to you, with no evidence of rogue automatic pop-ups or phony spyware alerts, and the fake alert icon is gone from the taskbar. Speed has improved as well. WooHoo! However that infernal desktop text/rogue URL is still present  . It's a 2KB file called <default.htm > and it lives in C:\WINDOWS. Trashing it (and emptying the Recycle Bin) is to no avail as it self-replicates within seconds. Also the Advanced Registry Optimizer file/folder seems to be invisible (except to HJT) and I haven't been able to remove it. Curses!

Here's the AVG Report:

Hi there O Silly One!

However that infernal desktop text/rogue URL is still present

Try this for it:

Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop... -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page"),

Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Apply.
Apply and Exit Display properties.

The see if it's still there and delete it if it is.

Also the Advanced Registry Optimizer file/folder seems to be invisible (except to HJT) and I haven't been able to remove it.

Do a search with Windows and see if it shows up so you can delete it. If not we'll run a tool and see if it shows up there.

Regards,
tea

Salutations, Most Excellent Binary Decipherer!

It's been a long day, and I apologize for the delay in responding.

However that infernal desktop text/rogue URL is still present
Try this for it:

Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Apply.

The see if it's still there and delete it if it is.

It is done as you command. My Desktop returneth. Had to reboot(-ith) first. (er...Sorry.)

Also the Advanced Registry Optimizer file/folder seems to be invisible (except to HJT) and I haven't been able to remove it.
Do a search with Windows and see if it shows up so you can delete it. If not we'll run a tool and see if it shows up there.

This last one's as stubborn a bug as a bug be, alas. What digital majick have ye to conjure upon this steadfast wickedness? (Yikes! Verily, a very long day indeed...)
Thanx,

B

Well yikeseth!

Okie dokieth :

Download Silent Runners.zip and extract it to a new folder on your Desktop.
  • Run the Silent Runners.vbs file.
  • You will receive a prompt: "Do you want to skip supplementary searches?" - click "NO."
  • If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow Silent Runners.vbs to run.
  • This script is not malicious so please allow it.
  • A text file will appear in the folder - it's not done, let it run. (It won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once the "All Done!" prompt flashes up, open the text file, and copy & paste it in your next reply.
Thankith ye (thee?No...thou?),
tea

Wiiiizard!!

Verily, I have sent forth the Silent Runner as you have decreed. I notice that the wicked AROReminder has flown the coop [file not found]. A Shortcut named "Check PC for Errors" hangs orphaned pointing to the non existent ARO file. I have slain the shortcut and the kingdom rejoices that your binary artistry has, it seems, saved the day. The Silent Runner reports thusly:

All kidding aside, I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude for your expertise and (sense of humor) during a rather nerve-racking experience.

Is there some other way to provide recompense w/o using PayPal - they keep screwing up my account and I've stopped using them.

I await your proclaimation of a clean bill of health, as I suspect we are on the verge of victory, and with it, sadly, our brief acquaintance will end. (Until the next plague hits).

Gratefully,
The Central Scrutinizer

Hello there,

Yay! You're most welcome, and thank you for your humor and positive attitude during a frustrating time.

There isn't anything amiss in the Silent Runners log except the one dragon you so valiantly slayed, so I believe we can deem your system clean again. You can delete Silent Runners.

You have some good protection in place, and the only thing I would encourage you to do is grab a Firewall : Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or Outpost. I use Comodo on my own system and really like it. http://comodo.com
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Take care!
