Windows 98se P III 733 128 omb ram, recently had about:blank virus, computer repair shop wiped everything clean and re-installed win98se only, not other programs(word, excel, etc), at start up a window opens saying "Building driver information database" then another "updating system settings". At shutdown screen stays on "Windows is shutting down" does nothing else. After manual shutdown, I went to system properties "device manager tab" Device: VIA Tech VT82C69x CPU to PCI bridge. Device is causing a resource conflict (code 15), clicked on hardware troubleshooter, but it will not open? Not sure what to do. Can you help, I know very little about computers, Thanks

Hi GaryYama and welcome to BC.

Sounds like your computer shop didn't complete the job. Go here and download the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement. Its a patch that will solve your shutdown problem. Obviously this is a known issue.

Your other problem is that your shop didn't install the drivers for your motherboard which is always the next thing you do after you install the Operating System. Take a look at this link to the ViaTech site and read through what it says. The software they want you to download there is free (read the fine print to get the free one) and after you install the SiSoft Sandra program it should give you a link to the correct driver to solve your Device Manager problem.

Post back and let us now how you are making out or if you want to try something else if you are not comfortable with that solution.

Get MDAC 3 here. How are you fixed for Windows updates?

Try looking through How to troubleshoot Windows 98 shutdown problems. There are a large number of issues that can cause this problem.
