On Saturday, our computer got infected with virtumondo. It happened to us before, several years ago, and at that time I got the help from Bleeping Computer to get rid of it, so I was familiar with some of the proceedure. So this time, I ran VundoFix, and also VirtumondoBeGone, but the virus was still there. I also updated Spybot, and it kept identifying Virtumondo, but before it could be removed, the whole system would blue screen crash (I'm sorry I didn't save the messages of the crashes). That happened several times. (Spybot was also prompting some alerts that I didn't quite understand). I also ran AVG antivirus several times, and it picked up and removed some viruses. I also ran AdAware, the newest version.

So for the last two days, I've carefully followed all the preparatory things recommended before posting this. I've online scanned with the three programs, and have run the Stinger program, and now have the HijackThis log ready to post. My family and I REALLY hope someone can help us get rid of this bugger.

Although I havn't had any direct answer, I'm not disappointed. I followed all of the pre-steps to getting my HijackThis done, and it seems to have taken care of that virus. My AVG, Spybot, and AdAware all come through clean. I'm hoping its still not hiding somewhere and won't cause future problems.

Thanks

I'm still having trouble.

A virus threat has been found, but I'm not able to pick it up on the normal AVG scan.

The freestanding popup from AVG says:

Threat Detected!
While opening file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fccbxuu.dll
Trojan horse BHO.DLJ

Ignore Info Heal Move to Vault

When I say move to the Vault, it says,

"Requested action is not available for this object.
Access to the file has been denied."

Any suggested help?
Thanks
ScottyA

  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
As I am still training, my posts to you will be checked by an Expert member. This will ensure that all advice and instructions I give you are accurate and safe. This may mean that my replies may take a little longer.

Sorry about the delay in responding

If you still need help, scan again with HijackThis, and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

I need to see another log from HijackThis.
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
  • Press the Save list button.
  • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi Jpshortstuff...Here's the info you asked for. And thanks again for your help.
ScottyA
PS...the computer acts slow at various random times. I think some of that may have been the PC Tools Spyware doing a scan. I changed the time of the scan to 4am.
Also, it seems that when one of my daughters accesses her MySpace, we get the virus alert popup that we can't do anything about.

Can I have a new HijackThis log as well please?

The last is very old and I need a new one to work from as a lot could have changed.

Thanks.

Hi

Viewpoint Media Player is often installed without the users permission. If you didn't install it, or if you did but you no longer use it, I recommend you get rid of it.

Please click Start >> Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.
Find the item below on the list and click Remove.
Viewpoint Media Player
Let me know how it goes.

You need to disable TeaTimer, so that it doesn't interfere with our fix.

This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, click once on Resident Protection, then right-click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For both versions :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go to the bottom of the vertical panel on the left, click Tools
  • Then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Disable Windows Defender.

Open Windows Defender.

Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Open HijackThis. Hit Do A System Scan Only. Place a check next to the following items (if present):

Close all browsers and windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Follow this link in Internet Explorer (Note: You must use Internet explorer to use Kaspersky): Kaspersky WebScanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

    o Scan Options:
    Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    Select My Computer
  • The program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
o Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the results of the Kaspersky scan in your next reply. Also, please give a detailed description of how your computer is running and behaving at the moment, listing any remaining problems.

Thanks.

I'm looking forward to this.
Following your directions, I'm having a difficulty with this
"Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)"

I don't see a this icon in the system tray. What I DO se is the AVG icon, the Google Updater icon, and the PC Tools Spyware Doctor icon.

I went ahead and started on the next directions, but when I got into the Spybot program to disable the Teatimer, a popup told me that the change wasn't going to be allowed.

So I'll wait until you can help me with finding the Spybot Icon in the System tray.

Thanks
ScottyA

Is there a little arrow on the edge of your system tray (upon hovering says "Show Hidden Icons")? If so, click that and see if the Spybot icon resides there.

Are you an Administrator on this computer? You should be allowed to make that change if you are...

What version of Spybot are you running?

I have found the "show hidden icons", and click on it, and it only shows the three I've mentioned.

Yes I'm the administrator. (So if I'm not able to find that icon and render it colorless, should I go ahead and follow the rest of the instructions, or do we need to figure this step out first?)

It is version 1.5.2
