I've gone through the preparation actions by downloading and running Ad-Aware, SpyBot, Housecall, Panda, Bit Defender and McAfee Stinger. I hope some kind person will take pity on me as I am really struggling with this nasty bug. Thanks.

Hello,

You're welcome.

Did you run any other option last time, or just option #1?

Please double-click the FindAWF icon once again

If a Security Alert shows, allow the program to run.
As instructed, press any key to continue.
Use the following option: Press 2 then Enter to restore files from bak folders

A text file opens called: files.txt
Click below the line and paste the following list of files to be restored:

"C:\Program Files\Apoint\bak\Apoint.exe"
"C:\Program Files\iTunes\bak\iTunesHelper.exe"
"C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak\QTTask.exe"
"C:\SCANJET\PrecisionScanPro\bak\HPLamp.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak\ctfmon.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\bak\bak\quickset.exe"
"C:\Program Files\McAfee\MSK\bak\MskAgent.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\bak\mm_tray.exe"
"C:\Program Files\SiteAdvisor\6253\bak\SiteAdv.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\bak\realsched.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\bak\bak\quickset.exe"

Next, close and click Yes to save the changes.

Once files.txt is saved, FindAWF does the following:
-It attempts to terminate the process represented by each filename on the list, if running
-Deletes the rogue file from the parent folder, if present
-Copies the original file to the parent folder

When done with the above, it automatically runs a new scan and opens a new log.
Please provide the new FindAWF log in your reply.

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

Please double-click the FindAWF icon once again
This time we are going to remove some folders.

If a Security Alert shows, allow the program to run.
As instructed, press any key to continue.
Use the following option: Press 3 then Enter to remove bak folders

A text file opens called: folders.txt
Click below the line and paste the following list of folders to be removed:

C:\Program Files\Apoint\bak
C:\Program Files\iTunes\bak
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak
C:\SCANJET\PrecisionScanPro\bak
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak
C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\bak
C:\Program Files\McAfee\MSK\bak
C:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\bak
C:\Program Files\SiteAdvisor\6253\bak
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\bak
C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\bak

Next, close and click Yes to save the changes.

When done with the above, FindAWF automatically runs a new scan and opens a new log that you need to post.
Please provide the new FindAWF log in your reply.

How is it running?

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

We'll get to the rest in a bit, promise.

Let's run option #3 again for that folder :

Use the following option: Press 3 then Enter to remove bak folders

A text file opens called: folders.txt
Click below the line and paste the following list of folders to be removed:

C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\bak

Next, close and click Yes to save the changes.

To finish, run Option 4.

Double-click the FindAWF icon once again.
Use the following option: Press 4 then Enter to reset domain zones.

When the program returns to the main menu, use the following option:
Press E then Enter to EXIT.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks,
tea

Hi Tea,

I'm not seeing the a.doginhispen website in my IE History anymore. IE has not closed without reason. I'm not seeing strange pop-ups or being sent to unknown websites.

Does this mean I'm done (oh please, please...)?

You've been great. Thanks again.

Any suggestions as to how I can keep this kind of crap out of my computer in the future?

Gratefully,

Dr. Thorne

Hello,

Good!! There really is nothing in the log that would indicate other problems. If you've run a scan with your AVG AntiSpyware, or other scanner you have on your system, and they've come up clean, then I think we're done here.

You can delete FindAWF.

If there are no further problems:

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

It is very important to maintain your Firewall.
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Take care!
