Hello guys

Grrr I'm so nervous, my pc was just formatted(bought a new hd) and problems started the next day..
Alright so, It all started when I downloaded bsplayer free. The installation said it will also install Advantage software or something, it was suspicious to me but still I said to myself "cmon there's no chance this is malware, it's from bsplayer a known application etc" and proceeded with the installation. Seems like I was wrong.
Next thing I did, I downloaded avast.
After I restarted my computer, I noticed cpu usage 100% all the time
and ofc, what else to see in processes than Advantagesetup.exe
Killed that processes, and cpu usage went back to normal. Then I just clicked on one of the tray icons of avast, and BOOM my computer suddenly restarted..
Then when I connected to the internet, after few minutes I think I was attacked by a hacker. My taskbar changed for a few seconds like i was having windows 98
(I think this was a hacker attack because in the past this happened to me only once, when I disabled firewall and started searching on lime wire lol)
We can conclude, using limewire without firewall is a suicide .
Anyway after that 'attack' I couldn't disconnect from the internet. I had to restart my cpu and I did.
Then, I couldn't access the internet

Was browsing my computer and I noticed something really strange. In control panel there was something called CSNW. I think I've never seen this bleep before and is probably the bleep that causes my unableness to access the internet(wow my english vocabulary).
Ran spybot and ad-aware fully updated, they found nothing.
Next thing I did, hijackthis. The strange thing that hijackthis found, was
'O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nwprovau.dll'
When I clicked on info it said
"
Windows locket system uses a list of providers for resolving dns name. this is called layered service provider(LSP).
A few programs are capable of injecting their own (spyware) providers in the LSP.
If files referenced by the LSP are missing or the 'chain' of providers is broken, none of the programs on your system can access the internet.
Removing references to missing files and repairing the chain will restore your Internet access,
So far, only few programs use a winsock hook.
Note: it's a risky process, if it fails get LSPFIX from www.cesxx.org/lspfix.htm to repari the winsock stack.
Action taken: none. use lspfix to modify the winsock stack."

So of course, nw is netware and the previously mentioned thing in control panel CSNW when i point my mouse to that it says "client service for netware"
Damn hacker/spyware/malware :@:@:@
I didn't fix anything with hijackthis cuz i'm not a pro and it said it's a risky thing.
I decided to do a system restore to 2 days ago.
Now I am able to connect to the internet as I'm writing this
BUT
that CSNW is still there, and many nw dlls are in system 32
in case you wanna see them, here's a screenshot

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/8318/nwspq0.jpg

Sorry for all this text, but hope it helps

p.s about advantagesetup.exe I think I removed it..

Here's a hijackthislog

Hello Beenthere,

I am currently studying your log and will be back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks for your very detailed description and for making the wise decision of not fixing anything with Hijackthis yourself!

Thank you for your patience

No need for new HijackThis, DSS will show me everything i need to know including an updated HijackThis log

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Thanks for the update Beenthere

I see that you have fixed some HijackThis entries. I recommend not fixing entries without expert knowlede as you may severely damage your computer if you fix the wrong entries

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

3. Do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Remember to post a new DSS log here in your next reply along with Kaspersky the log. Also, please let me know of any problems you may have encountered.

DSS only gives you a main.txt and an extra.txt on the first scan. For every scan after that, by default it only gives you the main.txt

Congrats, your log looks clean! Great job

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME, XP or Vista then you should disable and enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Instructions on how to enable and disable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore or Windows XP System Restore Guide or
Windows Vista System Restore Guide
Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Next,

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. (This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only)Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

I highly recommend that you keep this program in an easily accessible area, as there is a likelihood of you using it again

To make browsing the web safer, you should make Internet explorer safer. You should do this even if you do not use it, as it can not be installed from Windows.
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
You should use MVPS Hosts file which replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future. Please click here for it.

Finally, you SHOULD read the tutorial and follow each of the steps there:
Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Please feel free to post any future computer problems in the appropriate forum. Have a great day!

Ok, 2 things

1. I use CCleaner. Is it a good replacement for ATF Cleaner? It does everything what ATF does?

2. My hosts file is protected with the spybot option. Do I still need that MVP ?

I would rather use ATFCleaner myself because i do not like the idea of altering the registry unless i need to.
I highly recommend reading the thread here and making up your own mind though

I'm not familiar with any function in Spybot to do this, but even so i think it's best to be safe than sorry

errm, it got fixed now with clearing the private data from firefox lol

it probably happened because my ff browser was open on bleepingcomputers forum while I did the cleaning with ATF..
I assume next time you have to tell me to close my browsers while I clean with ATF ;)

anyhow about the hosts file, once again my super cool vocabulary/grammar/punctuation must have got you a wrong impression (tanned? :D:D)

i'm talking about the immunize option on spybot, which adds approx 8k sites to the hosts file(you must know that o.o)
tbh im not really sure if that particular option does that, but spybot does it.

that would be all

Oh that option, i know what you're talking about now ^^

I'd still use MVPS Hosts file as well as the Spybot immunise function, because one might be missing some entries that the other has
