Hello -
I have a laptop that is infected with at least one malware/adware infection. I have gone through the suggested methodology for cleaning the computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html) but the various utilities (Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, etc) have not managed to do the trick. Some of the symptoms are the following:
- My McAfee VirusScan continually catches items called "Vundo"
- when connected to the internet, there are constant pop-ups from the toolbar
- I noticed that there are two icons installed on my desktop that look like "Windows Update" and "Help and Support Center", but which are just shortcuts that point to www.storageprotector.com
- the computer is overall very slow and sluggish, taking >5min to startup and very slow to open windows and programs. The computer is basically useless.

I have attached the hijackthis log below. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi -

thanks for the quick reply and the suggestions. I followed your instructions and have attached the MBAM and new HijackThis logs below. During the MBAM repair, it did ask me to restart the computer to remove one of the infections, and I did this. When I restarted, my Spybot popped up to say that something was being changed, but it was identified as being from MBAM so I allowed it. Thus far, things seem to me working much more smoothly than before.

Here are the logs:

Hi,

We are not finished yet... still a lot to clean up here, but MBAM could already deal with most.

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.
After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
This will only take a few seconds.

Then,

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi -

ok, I followed your instructions, disabling TeaTimer and fixing the indicated problems using HijackThis.
I also ran ComboFix, during which I installed the recovery console for XP.
When I ran ComboFix, during the process it actually shut down and restarted my computer - hopefully this isn't a problem. I just logged in as usual and the ComboFix process continued until it was finished and the log popped up.

the logs from ComboFix and a new HijackThis Log are attached below:

Hi,

This looks OK again. Combofix deleted the leftovers, so everything should be fixed now.

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

It appears that everything is working smoothly. I will keep an eye on things for the next few days and get back to you if I notice anything happening that is out of the ordinary.

THANK YOU so much for your help and for the quick replies to my posts - it is greatly appreciated!

Glad I could help.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
