Have two machines I'm trying to clean for coworkers. I've used the info on this site and things have gotten better but don't seem quite there as sygate is still blocking some attempts on this machine and the aol spyware scanner (which I can't seem to turn off) is still saying there is spyware on the machine.

Here is the hijackthis log:

I also have a combofix log if it would help. Any help that can be given would be very appreciated. I'll post the log for the other machine in a separate topic.

ps C:\WINDOWS\system32\ifmbcpwr.exe seems to be a culprit, but I'm not sure how to permanently get rid of it

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer. :blink:

I apologize for the delay.

Please rerun a scan with HijackThis and check the following objects for removal:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8CF1EF91-D068-45FF-900D-516E0C9F327F} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\tusrr.dll (file missing)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [antiviirus] C:\Program Files\antiviirus.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [pijnrfxw] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ifmbcpwr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [rJCWQ6vA9U] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\pglizufk\bulelqpi.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZUxdm265YYUS
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O20 - Winlogon Notify: xxywurr - xxywurr.dll (file missing)

Now close ALL other open windows but HijackThis and hit FIX CHECKED. Exit HijackThis.

------

Next, please copy the following text in the quotebox below to a blank notepad file. Make sure the filetype is set to "All Files" and save it as delete.bat on your desktop.

@echo off

attrib -r -h C:\WINDOWS\system32\ifmbcpwr.exe
del /a /f /q C:\WINDOWS\system32\ifmbcpwr.exe
attrib -r -h C:\Program Files\antiviirus.exe
del /a /f /q C:\Program Files\antiviirus.exe
RD /s /q "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\pglizufk"
del delete.bat
exit

Now double-click on the delete.bat on your desktop -- a window will popup and close, this is normal.

-------

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. They should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Now to clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Then click Delete Files...
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH checked
Applications and Applets
Trace and Log Files

  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window
    Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
--------

Finally....

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply. :thumbsup:

Hi there, stranger!

How's the system running at the moment? :blink:

You seem to have quite a lot of memory in use.. and not much RAM. Slow PC? You seem to have both SpywareDoctor and Ad-Aware 2007. Might want to choose between them. If they are both on realtime protection that is -- if you only have the other installed and the other on patrol, that's fine. :thumbsup:

Please rerun a scan with HijackThis and 'fix' the following object by checking it and then clicking FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8CF1EF91-D068-45FF-900D-516E0C9F327F} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\tusrr.dll (file missing)

Exit HijackThis.

Go ahead and delete the following folder:

C:\VundoFix Backups

Do you have modified Hosts file in use, and have you set these policies yourself, on or some security app you have in use?

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system]
"DisableRegistryTools"=0 (0x0)
"HideLegacyLogonScripts"=0 (0x0)
"HideLogoffScripts"=0 (0x0)
"RunLogonScriptSync"=1 (0x1)
"RunStartupScriptSync"=1 (0x1)
"HideStartupScripts"=0 (0x0)

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system]

It's running a lot better than it was. I did a few things on my own while waiting for an initial reply and I haven't been seeing the slow downs and popups since then but I'm trying to get it as clean as possible before I return it to the owner.

It's true that it doesn't have a lot of RAM. I cleaned out some of her startup apps to keep the mem usage down as much as possible. Ad-aware and SpyBot are run on demand, SpywareDoctor is resident. I included it after reading an article while trying to find a fix and in truth it did find some things that neither Ad-aware or SpyBot found so I've added it to my own machines as well.

I have no idea about the hosts file. It isn't something I've changed, and I'm certain it's not something the owner has changed. Her brother gave her the laptop originally and he has done some work in the past to remove viruses/malware so it's possible that he modified something. To my knowledge the security apps installed are sygate firewall, avg free antivirus, SpywareDoctor, Norton Security Scan, Ad-aware, and Spybot. There is some AOL Computer Check icon on her desktop but I haven't run it.

Did you want to see the latest HJT log after I did that last fix?

Thank you again for the help, she and I both appreciate it very much,
Jen

Lookin' good. :thumbsup:

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to reboot during the cleanup, select YES.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware:

Detect and Remove Programs:Prevention Programs:
  • Comodo BOClean <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
  • SpywareBlaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. Detailed installation guide provided.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known adsites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Other necessary Programs:
  • Antivirus Program <= An antivirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like Avast! or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like NOD32 this is a must have. (Note to only use 1 at-the-time)
  • Firewall <= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Comodo and Online Armor. (Note to only use 1 at-the-time)
  • More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Setup guide for Comodo Firewall
Setup guide for Avast! 4 Free
Setup guide for AVG Free Antivirus

Thanks for the help, Rawe! I will look into adding those security measure to her pc before I return it to her.

Also, I don't know if this is breaking forum etiquette, but my helper on the other pc I'm working on hasn't been on the site for over 24 hours. I know you all have lives too so I'm not complaining, it's just that I'm getting daily calls from the owner. She's the daughter of a friend and she's eager for her pc back. Things were progressing but now have stalled. Is it possible to ask you pick up where he left off?

Sorry.. No. There's no etiquette to break with that as everyone here is a volunteer. He's probably in school as we speak, so I'm sure he'll be back anytime soon.

It's an early afternoon here right now. It's an policy of one helper per thread here.
