Hey! I'm not new to computers much at all. Spyware and viruses are a different thing entirely though. I rarely get them. But, somehow, my sister's computer has just about everything wrong with it lately.

The big things I've noticed so far are:

At start-up, before the "Starting Windows" screen, a blue and yellow screen pops up and says "Warning! You computer may be infected with spyware!"
She can't use Google in Firefox or IE7. When she does, a file called "search" (with no extension on it at all) pops up to be downloaded. She can use Yahoo just fine though.
Oftentimes, when browsing the internet, she'll be directed to various sites. They generally go to various "anti-spyware" sites. Ones I'd never heard of.
Her Firefox and IE7 both crash randomly.
Random porn pop-ups in IE7
Some things were found with Ad-Aware, but I couldn't get Ad-Aware to delete them. And I found stuff with Spybot, but they would keep coming back after being deleted, even when I'd restart at start-up.
Scanning the hard drive with NOD32 would result in a Blue Screen of Death when near completion or completed.
Windows Disk cleanup would crash before I could even get to deleting things.
McAfee's online scanning would crash before finishing.

I think those are the big ones anyway. Nothing I've learned to do could really help, or even the strategies recommended to do before I post a HJT log here. I'm down on my last resort before I reformat her computer...

Anyway, here's the log:

Apologies for the delay in responding.

The workload on this forum is intense, and sometimes it is not possible to respond to every
inquiry.

Please do the following:

Download SDFix

Save it to the Desktop
Right click SDFix.zip
Select: Extract All to extract it to its own folder

Now, reboot to Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer.
  • When the machine starts, tap the F8 key before Windows starts
  • You are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
  • Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
  • Press Enter to boot into Safe Mode.
In Safe Mode, open the SDFix folder on the Desktop
  • Double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • The process removes any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found, and then prompts you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the SDFix will run again and complete the removal process
  • It then displays Finished
  • Press any key to end the script and load the Desktop icons.
  • Once the Desktop icons load, the SDFix report opens on screen and saves itself in the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
~~~~
Next, download ComboFix
Save to the Desktop <<< Important!!
Information on the program - A Guide on using ComboFix: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
It includes the opportunity to install the Windows Recovery Console.
Before running ComboFix, close or disable all AntiVirus and AntiMalware programs so that they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Double-click combofix.exe to run the program
Follow the prompts.
(Don't click on the window while the program is running, it may cause your system to stall.)
When finished, a log, ComboFix.txt, is produced.
~~~~
Run HijackThis once again to obtain a new log.

~~~~
Please provide the contents of the SDFix Report.txt, the ComboFix log , and the new HijackThis log in your reply.
