one answer I read there says syncronizing time might help. however, when I went to do it, I found out my time is messed up. for one, it's in 24-hour clock mode (no AM or PM) and is an hour behind, even though I have it on the correct time zone and automatically adjusts to daylight savings).

I thought that SP2 was no longer available via the WinUpdate site, but I've been wrong before .

To download it, try this site: Service Pack 2 for Windows XP - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechn...n/winxpsp2.mspx

Under the Get The Service Pack caption, click on Download and deploy Service Pack 2 to multiple computers. On the next screen, click on Download.

Some WGA applet may run but it may not...things change.

What happens if you turn on automatic updates?
SP2 won't install without all prior SP1 updates and verification that this is a legal copy - WGA required and if you're on SP1 good bet WGA never downloaded to the old computer. Give the automatic updates a shot and see if there is some joy.

Can you go on the internet? If you can go download IE7... It's better. Or go on another computer go to the internet download and click save not open put it on disk and install it on your computer. or order it on CD.

I had to update an old PC to IE7 before I could receive updates from the update website. I got the same exact error while using IE6 (maybe even 5) and once I updated to IE7 it updated fine.

Also, Microsoft has a new update program thing that you can download from the update site. They now call it "Microsoft Update" instead of Windows Update. I suggest you get that as well. You'll see what I mean when you visit the site.

You can download SP2 from here.

I downloaded from that link overnight, but I got an error message saying "Acces is denied" then "Service Pack 2 installation did not complete. Select OK to undo the changes that have been made"
