Hello,

My computer has been very slow for 7-10 days and I've received several pop-up ads while using IE. Some ads direct me to random addresses (ebay and fubar usually) and others direct me to download spyware/adware removal (all of which I cancel out of).

My system is Windows XP 200 2 SP2, and I have Windows Defender installed which does not find anything. McAfee has detected the following trojans or unwanted programs: Vundo, Adware-MediaTickets, Generic.dx, Adware-Purity Scan, Downloader-BCF and Downloader.gen.a. All were quarantined or removed. Otherwise it does not find anything during recent scans.

I was advised to download Vundofix from moderators in the ďAm I infected? What do I do?Ē forum. (Log pasted below) It detected and deleted 3 items.

After running Vundo fix, I dowloaded AdAware and Spybot which both found Virtumundo and quarantined. Pop-upís have stopped for now but computer is still quite slow.

I ran trendmicro's online scan yesterday (after running AdAware and Spybot) and it detected 17 infections of CRYP-Tap-2 and 23 infection of Adware_Memberwatch. When I try to clean the infections with trend micro, it cleans all but 3 CRYP-TAP-2 infections. I believe these infections reappear upon reboot.

I was told to seek help in this forum from the helpful moderators in the "Am I infected" forum. Pasted below is the Hijackthis log from this morning (posted after Vundo fix log).

Any help would be appreciatted!

Thanks,
Chat Noir

Hello Chat Noir,

We will run ComboFix.

You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

You need to disable your Mc Afee Antivirus and Spybot Teatimer before running ComboFix, as they will prevent it from running.

To disable McAfee Virusscan:
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a Posted Image sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Exit."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled. Click on "Yes" to disable the Antivirus guard.
You succesfully disabled the McAfee Guard.

To disable Spybot's Teatimer:
Run Spybot-S&D
Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

To work properly, you must install ComboFix on the Desktop.
Do not run ComboFix more than once.

Be sure to install the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet. <== IMPORTANT
You DO NOT need to have the Windows CD to install Recovery Console!

We need Recovery Console because malware damages a lot and causes an instable system - and because of that, it may happen that your computer won't be able to boot anymore. With the Recovery Console installed, there are extra options present to repair whatever malware damaged.
Also, even though you're not infected, the presence of the Recovery Console is a useful feature in case a computer won't boot anymore because of several other reasons. Read here what you can do with the Recovery Console.

Extra note: After you have installed the Recovery Console - if you reboot your computer, right after reboot, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well.
Don't select to run the Recovery Console as we don't need it.
By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows.

Post the ComboFix log.

Hi SifuMike:

Thanks for responding to my post. I was able to disable McAfee ans Spybot per your instruction.

I followed the instructions in the "How to use Combofix" tutorial-downloaded and saved Combofix to my desktop. Next, I downloaded XP Recovery Console from Microsoft and saved to desktop. I dragged to Microsoft icon to the Combofix icon. This automatically opened Combofix. I selected 'Run' and got a blue screen which said:

Please wait.
Combofix is preparing to run.

Then,
Scanning for infected files...
This typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes
However, badly infected machines may easily double

I then got a prompt to Install XP Recovery Console, and selected Yes. Recovery Console was installed.

Next, I got a pop-up that a log would be created and that I should not reboot until advised. I selected OK and got the following log:

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Not sure what the next step is. Do I try to re-run Combofix?

Thank you,
Chat Noir

Hi Chat Noir,

selected OK and got the following log:

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

Not sure what the next step is. Do I try to re-run Combofix?

Yes, you get the above log when you have correctly installed Recover Console.

So now you can run ComboFix and post the log.

You can carry on from this point in the tutorial:

Once you have finished installing the Windows Recovery Console, please continue with the rest of the tutorial.

We are almost ready to start ComboFix, but before we do so, we need to take some preventative measures so that there are no conflicts with other programs when running ComboFix. At this point you should do the following:
