Hi techi

From the link that you added, i read this:

I have zonealarm internet security

is this the full suite version that also contains an Anti-Virus protector?
The reason i ask is that there is no seperate AV showing in your log.

Step 1
Please disable Spybot S&Dís TeaTimer protection, because it is known to interfere with our fixes.
You can enable it again after you're clean.
Open Spybot and click on 'Mode' then click 'Advanced Mode'.
Click on 'Tools' in bottom left hand corner.
Click on the 'System Startup' icon.
Uncheck 'Teatimer' box and/or uncheck 'Resident'.
Click the 'Allow Change' box.
Then, check next to the computer clock to see if the icon for Spybot is still there.
If it is, right click it and choose 'exit Spybot-S&D Resident'.

Reboot the computer.

Step 2
Your log shows that MSConfig is running at startup. This indicates that you may be using "diagnostic startup" rather than "normal startup" to stop something running. While this is normally ok, it is possible that you have disabled something that will affect how we fix your malware problem.
While disabled, it will not then show up in the HijackThis log.

Go to Start ... Run... and type Notepad
Copy/paste the following text inside the quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is unchecked.

regedit /a /e %systemdrive%\regkey.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig"
notepad %systemdrive%\regkey.txt
del /q %systemdrive%\regkey.txt

Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "mslook.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)
Locate mslook.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your reply. When you close Notepad the CMD window will close automatically and the text file will be deleted.

Step 3
Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these items.
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_03) -
O18 - Protocol: linkscanner - {F274614C-63F8-47D5-A4D1-FBDDE494F8D1} - (no file)

Then close all other windows, browers etc--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Reboot your computer to complete the process.

Step 4
Please download FixWareout from one of these mirrors:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it..... allow it instead.
Then you will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log

In your next reply, please submit:
Results of the 'mslook.bat'
FixWareout.txt
and a new Hjt log.
Could you also let me know about the AV.

Thanks.

Hi Starbuck,
Got as far as step1 and rebooted, and have spent hours trying to access programs i am getting a popup window stating "services and controller app has encountered a problem. We are sorry for the inconvenience" If i click dont send report to microsoft it shuts my system down with a 1 minute timer. I i select send report it appears to but then freezes system likewise with debug. In order to get this email to you I have to leave window open and unclicked in the backround and disable zonealarm from loading. Zonealarm was preventing services.exe from sending to internet, because if I enable it within zonealarm my system send thousands of spam email in the backround.

I am going to try continue with the step2 whilst in this mode see if I can, and the rest if possible.

Zonealarm is full version with antivirus.

cheers

Hi techi

Just a quick question:

There's a few Java 6 update 5 lines with [file missing]....Any idea why files should have dissapeared?
If you have altered something................ Please remember:

1. Please do not make any system changes yet. as any changes you make may well alter your log.

If you make changes without informing me, i don't know what's changing log lines.... therefore it makes things complicated.
When you run the DSS scan, please make sure that everything is running.

From what you say:

Zonealarm was preventing services.exe from sending to internet, because if I enable it within zonealarm my system send thousands of spam email in the backround.

There's seems to be more going on than is showing in your Hjt log.
We need to look a little deeper.

Let's have a good clean out and then we'll have a look at what is left.

Step 1
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Step 2
I see that you have SuperantiSpyware installed.
Please update the definitions now.
Once they have been updated close SuperantiSpyware down.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
You will need to use the 'keyboard arrow keys' to navigate on this menu.
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
* Then choose your usual account.

Restart SuperantiSpyware
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
Note:I've noticed that sometimes the scan report isn't visible in 'normal mode'.... if this is the case. Reboot into 'Safe Mode' and try the instructions again.
Sometimes the reports are visible in Safe Mode.

Step 3
Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

1. Close all applications and windows.
2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
3. When the scan is complete, it will create two text files - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized on your Taskbar.
4. Copy/paste both logs back here please (they will also be located at C:\Deckard\System Scanner).

Make sure you notice the extra.txt second log that will show as minimized on your Task Bar, "Maximize" that and be sure to paste those contents here as well.

In your next reply, please sumbit:
The Superantispyware report
Both DSS reports.

Thanks.

All steps completed as requested, the java lines you spoke off that are missing I have no idea why, only I did upgrade to latest version as requested on this website. Only other thing might be I did run a registry cleaner.

Hope this helps the Service Control App error is still there in the backround.

Hi techi

Only other thing might be I did run a registry cleaner

As well intentioned as they are.... 'Registry Cleaners' can sometimes cause more harm than good.(as we have seen)
I see the 09 lines are now back...... but the 02 line is still showing (file missing).
I'm inclined to leave this line as we know that the program is actually installed.

Your logs are showing no malware related issues now.
We have cleaned out everything that was showing.
I would suggest that we clean up what we have done and then your best bet would be to go to the Windows XP forum:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/56/windows-xp-home-and-professional/
and ask about the 'Service Control Application ' errors in there...... they are more qualified to handle this than i am.

I am a bit concerned that you have to keep closing down 'Zone Alarm' because of these 'service' errors.
In doing this you are leaving yourself with No anti-virus or Firewall control.

I'm sorry that i can't be of more help to you.

Suggestion.
Have you tried removing the Zone Alarm suite and down loading seperate Firewall and Anti-Virus protectors?
If you want to try this, i can give you some links that may help:
AV'sFirewallsStep 1
Recommendation.
SuperAntiSpyware doesn't need to start when Windows starts.
You can start it manually when you need to do a scan.

To change this:
Restart SuperAntiSpyware...
Then from the main page, Click on the Preferences button....then untick... 'Start SuperAntiSpyware when Windows starts'.
Then click Close. and then Close on the next screen to exit the program.

Step 2
Let's remove the programs that you installed.

Please delete any desktop icons that you have for:
FixWareout
Deckards System Scanner

Then please navigate to this folder... right click on it and select Delete.
C:\Deckard

Step 3
Now you should Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Select the drive for cleaning then click OK (usually 'C' drive)
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
To find out how you may have been infected....read this topic:
So how did i get infected?

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

I have re-instated zonealarm and the "services and controller app" window disappears, however when service requests to access the internet if i say yes it starts to generate the spam emails all over again creating file in my windows\temp directory. So it would seem the malware is still there any ideas?

When Zonealarm is loaded it will inform me service.exe "Service and Controller App" is requesting access to internet to send email, if I say yes to this 4 files get generated and tons of emails are sending in the backround.

After I say yes to allow service.exe to send I have my windows\temp folder open and I can see the files it creates, then run netstat from command prompt and see the smtp outgoing messages.

I am assuming the files it creates in temp folder are attachments or the emails themselves. It seem once I have said yes to allow services.exe it my computer communicates with internet get an answer back or files then generates the tmp files and starts sending.

I can delete these file but it will just generate more after it sends a batch.

If I dis-allow service.exe from sending email the tmp files will not be generated and no activity on netstat.

If you wish I can setup gotomypc.com and you can log into my machine and see this for yourself all thats required is to allow service.exe to send via zonealarm.

Like that if i desable zonealarm it then triggers the error on service controller app, screwed if i do - screwed if i dont.
