Hi, here is the background......
I had a report from my ASP that my limits were being breached and that I was sending a lot of email. I was not aware of abnormal actions, so I checked my computers. The home desktop seemed OK, my work laptop seemed OK, but the laptop my daughter was using, was not OK.
When connected to the Internet symantec email proxy was popping up saying that it could not deliver mail and the screen became a myriad of messages being scanned by Symantec.

So I installed AVG (ewido) [which is on home PC but not the laptop!!] and did a scan, to my horror a keylogger was found, together with a microsoft redirection. it removed both, but I had to also use ccleaner.exe and SDFIX to finally get AVG to report nothing found and the apparent emailing activity to stop.

I then noticed that the hardisk was still going crazy, with no one touching it (there is no utility that I know of running that should cause that much activity). If I switch off internet, the hardisk activity stops....

So I searched on Internet and found your site, I have followed the pre-log procedure, and cleaned out temp files (also used ccleaner), installed ad-aware (nothing found), Installed spybot (nothing found), ran bitdefender online scanner (this found items in symantec quarantine and removed them) and ran mcavee stinger. Symantec anti-virus, qurantined some files and now reports no issues.

I also loaded malwarebytes' anti-malware, which did find other items, ROOTKIT.AGENT, MALWARE.TRACE, WORM.IRC.BOT, ADWARE.BHO and removed them, however, in normal and safe mode it sees Trojan.bho, removes it, but when I redo scan, it says it is still there.....

Hello AAN612143,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

Before we go anywhere here, you should know that the safest and surest thing to do would be a reformat and reinstall. Even if all your scans, or scans we might do here, come up clean, there is no promise that it is totally safe, or ever will be. Please think this over and let me know what you decide to do.

Regards,
tea
