Okay, so here is my weird problem. I am operating vista ultimate 64 bit. I did the first overclock on my system yesterday, only a moderate one from 2.0 mhz to 2.63 mhz and everything seems rock solid. Tonight, I try to play Age of empires 3 and when I open it, it opens an infinite ammount of times causing me to have to restart my computer. I get back on and try opening a different game, solitare and it does the same thing. So far the only thing i have found to do this is games but the Office suite did open kind of slowly also. I don't know if this is a bios issue so i brought everything back to stock and the same thing still happens. Anyone ever heard of this? Am I dealing with a system issue, a bios issue or possibly a virus? I am thinking it can't be a virus as I have been very careful about downloading anything on this computer, hardly get online with it at all actually. Any insight would be great! thanks

Could be damaged hardware. I'd suggest trying another keyboard and mouse as the first step in troubleshooting this.

Also, does it occur in Safe Mode?

I'm just guessing here - but have you tried to run sfc.exe /scannow?

I am still having the same problem, any time i try to open a game, even solitare it opens infinity times. I have tried different keyboards and 2 different mouse's and still have the problem. Anyone have any idea what is going on? i have ruled out a virus (i think). Thanks for any help anyone might have!

SFC.EXE does work in Vista (just finished running it because of another thread here). Here's a link to a "how to" by Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228 The logfile sfcdetails.txt will be created in the directory that you opened the command prompt (on my system it was C:\Windows\System32 )

I'd also check into a few free, online antivirus scans just in case something has slipped by your protection:
Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully:

Thanks for the help. I will run some of these when I am back on my desktop.

Let's say it is not a virus, and its not my keyboard/mouse. What else can cause a problem like this?

It can be caused by: Hardware, Software, or Drivers (that's pretty much all there is).

Hardware and drivers are unlikely in this case, Software could be it - either the OS or the software programs that are installed,

AVG Free Edition then I guess windows defender.

I have run full scans with that and then avast and the kapersky like usasma suggested and both show nothing.

I am stumped?

Have you tried returning the your CPU to un-overclocked settings to see if the same results occur? This would be my guess being you said it started after you overclocked your CPU. You best bet would to just return the whole BIOS to default settings, just in case (except boot order if necessary).

Thanks for the help. Yes I have returned everything to factory settings and it did not make a diference. One peculiar thing about it that has started in the last day is that about half the time it is working fine and half the time it opens stuff up infinity times. I have not figured out a common denominator yet.

can you clarify; does this repeat opening of games occur with ALL of them of just one specfic program?
from which sourse did you obtain the game and was this sourse the same from prior to and after the factory restore?
