Posted 04 March 2008 - 10:38 PM

I have fake official looking pop ups re-dirceting me to a spyware removal software called Spy Away and Perfect Cleaner. Thi infection has also replaced my sreen saver with an alert screen saver on blue background. It tries and connect to the internet about every 10 minutes and has pop ups appear everywhere. I tried some basic stuff like retore system to a previous setting, which It won't let me do, and scaned with Norton and AVG withou sucess. Hopefully someone can help with this. Here is the HijacThis log file:

Hello hurtz33,

NOTE: If you have downloaded SmitfraudFix previously please delete that version and download it again! Also delete C:\rapport.txt

Please download SmitfraudFix

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process;
please copy/paste the content of the SmitfraudFix report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Hi hurtz33,

Please post another Hijackthis log from the normal mode.
The last one was done in the Safe Mode, so it is not showing all the running processes.

Please do not attach the logs as they are hard to read that way. Thanks.

Heillo hurtz33,

You have Hijackthis on your E drive , E:\HiJackThis.exe, and it needs to be on your C drive and in a Hijackthis folder. We have backups of the changes we make, so it has to be on the root drive, C:\

The folder should look like this C:\Hijackthis\HiJackThis.exe.

Here is how to make a Hijackthis folder:

Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "Hijackthis".
Now you have C:\HJT\ folder or C:\Hijackthis folder.
Put your hijackthis.exe there.

Download LSP-Fix from the following link and save it to a location you can find later. Do not run it now but we may need it later.
LSP-Fix Download Link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lspfix.php

Follow these steps to remove Webhancer:
Click on start, settings, control panel.
Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
Uninstall Webhancer from the listing of programs

Delete the following files and directories (if they are there):

c:\program files\webhancer\
c:\windows\webhdll.dll
c:\windows\whagent.inf
c:\windows\whInstaller.exe
c:\windows\whInstaller.ini

If you can not connect to the Internet after removing Webhancer, please run the LSP-Fix program I had you download earlier, and click on the finish button.
Reboot and you should be able to get back on.

At this point, Webhancer should now be removed from your computer.

*******************************************

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Autocomplete Forum History.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all including cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer, post a new Hijackthis log, the OTMoveIt2 log and tell me how your computer is running.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi hurtz33,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 5.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 5".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6u5-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Are you seeing any problems with this computer?

I can't remove or load Java because Windows is giving me the following message - "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in Safe Mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed..." I am not in safe mode.
