Hi All,
Hoping to get a solution here. My machine is attacked by rouge adware antispywareupdate.net, My desktop screen is hijacked with warning stating that My machine is infected with spyware and to remove the spyware click here (a link to spyware software download).

Also every time I get a ballon at system tray stating the system is slo w or internet attack attempt detected etc. and inisists to install the spyware. (from antispywareupdate.net).

I have norton 360 on my machine upto date. I did full scan of the machine and found 4 issues. 2 of them were webhancer which I removed using the symatec tool to remove it. However norton has reported following two which I am not able to remove.

adware.mirar and trackware.7FasstSearch

Also frequently I get a window security center message (may be a fake one) about infection by TrojanDownloader.xs

I am providing my HiJackthis log here.

Hello asali,

NOTE: If you have downloaded SmitfraudFix previously please delete that version and download it again! Also delete C:\rapport.txt

Please download SmitfraudFix

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of the SmitfraudFix report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi asali,

Now that Smitfraud is gone, how is the computer running?

You have some suspicious files we need to check.

Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Go to next site: http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Save the results in notepad.

Perform the same for next files:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\lcpmfari.dll

Once scanned, copy and paste the results also in your next reply.
If I've saved you time & money,

Hi Sifumike,

At least a bit of relief from the annoying and stressful desktop and systray spyware hijacks.
After running the smitfraud.exe, it got rid of the desktop blocking and also the pop up (ballon at sys try) warning messages gone. after that I did a complete scan using the Norton 360 and still I had the following as risks (but norton did not take any action)

trackware.7faSStSearch and adware.mirar

As you have mentioned I ran service.exe and lcpmfari.dll at virustotal and here is the logs of each file (there are indeed reference to the above adware and trojan)

Hi asali,

You still have some malware, so we will remove it.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language  jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
*******************************************

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {56e09a6c-1dd2-11b2-a8a7-94c3b0f1def7} - C:\WINDOWS\tilatsxy.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MDNS] C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lcpmfari] regsvr32 /u "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\lcpmfari.dll"

*******************************************

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\lcpmfari.dl"

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Note : If a reboot was necessary or you needed to Exit before posting the log, you will find a copy of the log at the root of the drive where OTMoveIt is installed, usually at :
    C:\_OTMoveIt2\MovedFiles\********_******.log
    (where "********_******" is the "date_time")
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Caution: Be careful of what you copy and paste with this tool. OTMoveIt2 is a powerful program, designed to move highly persistent files and folders. Not following the directions as instructed or using incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system.

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Autocomplete Forum History.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all including cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer, post a new Hijackthis log, the OTMoveIt2 log and tell me how your computer is running.

Hi SifuMike,

Installed latest Java JRE, Using HIJack this removed the 3 tasks mentioned, I came up to OTMoveit Downloaded

pasted file path for these two (For the second line below used lcpmfari.dll and not lcpmfari.dl" as it did not find out this file)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\lcpmfari.dll

For the first click on Moveit - at right hand side - C:\WINDOWS\system32\service.exe was removed successfully however nothing happened for the second file (no log file generated) So clicked on move it button again, however Move it application hung and I had to kill the process.

I tried several times two move lcpmfari.dll but everytime Move it Application hung and I had to kill the process

Please guide what should be done.

Thanks
Asali

Hi SifuMike,

I have already tried the way you mentioned. withe following path

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\lcpmfari.dll

and clicked on moveit button ( I tried again today). BUt the OTMoveIt2 HANGS for this. (Note only for this particular file lcpmafridll) I dont even get to see anything in right side logs.

IN Task manager there will be two Applications with name OTMoveIT2 but both of their status is NOT Responding. Is this normal? how long I should wait. even after 10 minutes status remains the same.

I am not able to provide any logs as I dont see any in there. Since OTMoveIt2 hangs for this file and do not recover I had to kill the OTMoveIT2 Application from task manager.

What should be done in this situation?

Thanks
Asali

Hi asali,

I think you still have some Vundo hiding, so we will run ComboFix.

You need to disable your Norton Antivirus before running ComboFix, as it will prevent it from running.

To disable Norton Antivirus:
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a Posted Image sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Disable Auto-Protect."
  • select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
  • click "Ok."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled and the sign will now look like this: Posted Image
You succesfully disabled the Norton Antivirus Guard.

You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Be sure to install the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet. <== IMPORTANT

You do not need the Windows CD to install Recover Console.

We need Recovery Console because malware damages a lot and causes an instable system - and because of that, it may happen that your computer won't be able to boot anymore. With the Recovery Console installed, there are extra options present to repair whatever malware damaged.
Also, even though you're not infected, the presence of the Recovery Console is a useful feature in case a computer won't boot anymore because of several other reasons. Read here what you can do with the Recovery Console.

Extra note: After you have installed the Recovery Console - if you reboot your computer, right after reboot, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well.
Don't select to run the Recovery Console as we don't need it.
By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows.

Post the ComboFix log.

Hi asali,

Click Start, then Run and type Notepad and click OK.
Open notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the code box below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\ixubmjsz.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinNB57.dll

Name the Notepad file CFScript.txt and Save it to your desktop.

IMPORTANT: The above script was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi asali,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 5.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 5".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6u5-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Reboot your computer, post a fresh Hijackthis log and tell me how your computer is running.
