I am CONTINUING to receive annoying pop-ups even though I've run Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware several times today...so I just ran HijackThis and maybe something in the log will clue someone off as to what is happening...I think I've got a spyware program that continues to allow pop-ups...

You have a CWS infection. Please download the CWShredder from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Next, please boot into safe mode and run it.

Please download, update and run the A2 (A squared) anti-trojan. You can download it free at http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ . Let it fix whatever it wants to.

Also, run this pc through the Panda Scan Online virus scanner.

Next, reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log to this thread.

:D

Okay,

I followed all the steps you said to...

I didn't find iphlpapi.exe, but I found iphlpapi.dll, but I left it because you didn't say to delete it...

Here are the results for the latest HJT scan after I rebooted...

Please press ctrl+alt+delete to bring up the task manager. Click on InetCntrl.exe and then hit the "end process" button.

Next, please select the following with HijackThis. With all windows (including this one!) closed, please select "fix.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InetCntrl] C:\WINDOWS\System32\InetCntrl\InetCntrl.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [iphlpapi] C:\WINDOWS\System32\iphlpapi.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [zSearch] C:\Program Files\zSearch\Zstb.exe

Look in Add/Remove programs and see if you can find and remove the following:

Internet Control or any variation of InetCntrl
zSearch or any variation of it.

Then find and delete the following:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\InetCntrl <<Folder.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\iphlpapi.exe <<File.
C:\Program Files\zSearch <<Folder.

Let me know the outcome and show me a fresg HijackThis log.

Okay, this has been a bugger...

I followed your instructions, but I've had some problems. When I deleted InetCntrl, I think I disabled my BSafe Online Security system and firewall. I deleted InetCntrl from HJT and then searched for InetCntrl and found inetcntrl.dll and inetcntrl.exe-IC9CA9DE.pf (this one was in the prefect folder). I left those alone because the description for the dll file said it was from Bsafe. But then when I tried connecting to ie, I got a message saying that the Bsafe system wasn't running and wouldn't open any webpages and said I had to reboot. When I tried to reboot, I got the message that NTLDR was missing and that I should hit any key to continue. I kept on pressing keys but nothing would work to make it boot. So I called CompUSA and talked to their Tech Shop and they said that something had been deleted from my boot file and that I should reboot off of the Windows XP disk and fix it. I turned off the computer and rebooted with the XP disk and it started fine. So what do I need to do to replace the NTLDR file and reboot regularly without having to use the XP disk?

After I deleted the zSearch log from HJT, I didn't find any other files for it.

I did not find iphlpapi.exe, but I found iphlpapi.dll. Should I delete this?

Also, I had to reinstall Bsafe, so I might have the InetCntrl folder and file back on my computer if Bsafe is the program in that file.

I hate to ramble, but I want to let you know everything that's happened so you might know what's going on.

Here are the results of the latest HJT log...

First, I am so very sory you've had to go through so much trouble!!

Secondly, do not delete the iphlpapi.dll . You need that one. It's the .exe that's the troublemaker, and that appears gone.

When you called CompUSA did they give you specific instructions to fix the problem for good? I'm not certain exactly what you did, other than start up with the boot disc in place.

Also let me know how everything is working right now? Any more internet slowdowns or popups?
Knowledge is the most powerful weapon.

If I have helped you please pass along the good deed to someone else. If you would like to donate then I thank you also.

My wife thinks that it might be a little better...she didn't see any pop-ups when she was working on the computer this morning...I haven't really been at home and on the computer enough today to notice...

When I called CompUSA, they just told me to reboot with the XP disk. I haven't done anything to fix the file; I don't know how. I've still got the XP disk in the drive. I haven't tried to reboot the computer without it. Do you know how to replace the file?

Also, did anything look suspicious in that last HJT log I posted? The only thing I didn't recognize was the following:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &411 Ferret Toolbar search - res://C:\Program Files\411Ferret\toolbar.dll/SEARCH.HTML

Do I need to delete this?

Do I appear to have gotten rid of the problem-causing programs/spyware?

Thanks for your help!

I unzipped the file you attached into my system32 folder...what do I do next?

Also, what do I do with this log in HJT?...

You can remove that if you wish, then post a new log
