Have a Hitachi GD-8000 DVD/CD ROM. Was working no problem before I upgraded to XP, but now will not read any CDs at all. Device manager says it's working ok. Found no help in troubleshooting and even downloaded updates on driver from Hitachi, but system says the driver installed is already good.

Can ROMs be burned out but still being read as operating properly by the device manager? I've been working on this bloody system for 6 months now. This is the last glitch. HELP!!!

Is it not reading cds and dvds?

If you insert a disc, does the light on front blink a few times and then stop? Does it show the disc in my computer or no disc inserted?

If it shows no disc inserted, stick your ear up against it after pytting a disc in and do you hear the laser assembly moving around. Will be a high pitch sound?

Is the disc spinning? You should be able to hear that after inserting a disc.
