Hi all,
I need help , I'm not the most computer savy guy around so please bear with me. I picked up some type of spyware or malware and can't get rid of it. Not everytime but almost everytime I load and internet page I get a a pop up page for an ad or a search page with something I didn't request.

Also once in a while I get a buffer over run message, sorry but I forgot to write down exactly what the message says.

I followed the directions on what to before posting a log file and I'm still getting the unwanted pages. One note I'd like to mention I couldn't get BHODemon to remove anything and AdAware and Stinger no longer have the settings you recommend to use. I guess they are updated versions. Also Avert Stinger is an old version, 9/07 I believe ( again Im the most savy guy around computers ) and I was unable to find an update setting in the menu.

Thanks in advance for any help in resolving this problem ................. Joe

Seems to be happening more often. After hitting the post now button an Ebay page popped up instead of going directly to my posted message. Luckily IE7 opens a new page and I just X out of the phoney.

Thanks again................ Joe

Hello JOE161,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with the fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Hello,

Please print these instructions or copy them to Notepad (or another word processor), and save it for easier reference. This is because we will be in Safe Mode during the fix and you won’t be able to access the Internet to view these instructions.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition and save that file to your desktop.

This is a 30-day trial of the program -- This means that after 30 days the "background guard" protection will be de-activated. However, this version can continue to be manually updated and used as an on-demand scanner forever.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the setup program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need to run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the top of the main screen select the "Update" icon, then under the "Manual update" section click the "Start update" button.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed (the progress bar will display "Update successful!") select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the "Settings" screen:
    • Click on "Recommended actions" -> select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports:" -> select "Do not automatically generate reports".
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Please do NOT run a scan yet!
Next, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Reboot your computer.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but just before the Windows icon appears, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, reboot the computer and try again.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the "Safe Mode" menu item, and then press "Enter".
Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [38134228.exe] C:\Documents and Settings\DeerHunter\Local Settings\Application Data\38134228.exe
O21 - SSODL: coursings - {f8d02387-789a-4c0f-a1d8-8a93f33ee4df} - (no file)
O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: {f8d02387-789a-4c0f-a1d8-8a93f33ee4df} - coursings - (no file)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Navigate to and delete the following file:

C:\Documents and Settings\DeerHunter\Local Settings\Application Data\38134228.exe

Then please run a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab. Click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select the "Apply all actions" button, AVG Anti-Spyware will then display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
    • Next select the "Save Report" button at the bottom.
    • Then select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand corner of the screen and save it as a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important!).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system normally into Windows. Please post the contents of the AVG Anti-Spyware report in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
Please delete ComboFix and it's accompanying folder, C:\Qoobox

How is it running now?

Thanks,
tea

teacup61,

I will absolutely follow your directions but just to let you know, I've been surfing the net and haven't had one pop or redirected page, but I will still follow your directions.

However I have to go to meeting in a short while and won't be able to do this until later on tonight or first thing in the morning. I will post when I complete your instructions.

I can't begin to thank you enough for sharing your knowledge and help in this matter .......... Joe

Hello Joe,

Glad it's better, and you're most welcome.

teacup61,

In a word EUREKA ! My computer seems to be running as good if not better then before it got infected. I owe it all to YOU and Bleeping Computer.

The only problem(?) I encountered was, you told me to delete the file

C:\Documents and Settings\DeerHunter\Local Settings\Application Data\38134228.exe

I was unable to find this file after following your instructions to click " Fix Checked " after scanning with HijackThis.

One last thing. Do you recommend that I keep all anti spyware programs ie AVG Anti-SpyWare, Ad-Aware, Search and Destroy and Zone Alarm or only one and which one do you recommend I keep? Keeping in mind I use AVG as my anti virus software.

I can't thank you enough. Below are the logs from AVG Anti-Spyware and Hijack This.

Hello,

You're most welcome.

I was unable to find this file after following your instructions to click " Fix Checked " after scanning with HijackThis.

That's as it should be. Better to be sure by looking, just in case.

AVG Anti-SpyWare, Ad-Aware, Search and Destroy and Zone Alarm or only one and which one do you recommend I keep? Keeping in mind I use AVG as my anti virus software.

Keep it all. You only run into problems when you try to run 2 AntiVirus programs at once, or 2 software Firewalls.

If there are no further problems:

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

It is very important to maintain your Firewall.
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Take care! Posted Image
