I have a laptop with XP Home SP2:

This laptop is mainly used by my wife to email, and shuts it down when done.

I have discovered that the system will not make automatic restore points unless the PC is on.

Question: Will the system make automatic restore points if a User is not logged on?

Hi Trapper, here is a article that will explain most of your questions http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-xp-system-restore-guide/
To answer your question, system restore points are created before a certain event takes place such as a program istallation or an OS update. You can also manually create a restore point. Have a look at the article which will answer nearly all of your questions.
