Hello... Let me start off by saying thank you to whoever started these help forums. I am sure they have been a lofesaver to many and hopefully you will be able to help me as well...

I currently am infected with the Vundo trojan (Trojan.vundo.DZK, Trojan.vundo.DVS and Trojan.vundo.DWB have all popped up during preliminary scans through Bitdefender, Panda, and Prevx).

I believe I am also infected with Virtumonde as it popped up when scanning with Adaware and Spybot.

Ironically I just switched Internet Security Suites as well. I used to have CAs Etrust (the license expired) and never enabled the firewall due to very slow internet speeds. I did run their antivirus software prior to uninstalling and it found the Darksma virus. I have not seen it come up since that scan. I now have a new license with Bitdefender Internet Security Suite and it seems to be working much better (I continuously see pop ups that it is blocking viruses and denying registry edits).

The symptoms I am noticing are:

1) a very, very slow and lethargic system - especially during the initial bootup process

2) A windows error that pops up every now and then when trying to access Internet Explorer - Buffer Overrun Detected C://Windows/explorer

3) The desktop icons and start up bar will disappear.

4) Another odd occurence was when I opened my C:// drive folder there were over 500 files that were in that folder (i apologize for not writing down the name - I believe they were .dll files but can't remember). There are usually only the usual Documents and settings, Program files, etc in there. I deleted all of these files and flushed the recycle bin.

I have gone through the preparation guide completely and here is my hijackthis log (I read somewhere that you should change the name of the hijackthis executable because some malware can 'hide' from the scan - I did not do that yet and will wait for any instructions - I followed all instructions from the preparation guide - which was very well-written I must say)...

Hello Tea!

Thanks for replying to my post.

I am currently out of town and away from the infected PC. I should be back late Friday or early Saturday to post a new HJT log.

I did go in and make some adjustments to which services are running as well as startups so it (the HJT log) is different. However, I ran some scans after the changes and the bugs were still there.

I will send a reply in a few days...

By the way, I am from Texas (Houston) as well

I am still getting lots of messages from my AV that it is blocking Vundo.

Thanks for being willing to take a look at it! Let me know if you need anything else...

Hello,

Glad you made it back all right.

Yep, looks like by the lack of entries, you have a scorching case of Vundo.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Hi Tea!

Here is the ComboFix log. While it was running my firewall was going crazy with registry edits. If I ever need to run it again should I disable the firewall or just continue to click allow? (I apologize for being an amateur)

Hi there,

Thanks.....I've always liked that silly little icon too.

That wasn't as bad as you think, promise. Those are in system restore and not a threat.

Your Java is way out of date, which leaves your computer vulnerable.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Reboot your computer.

How is it running?

I noticed in the ComboFix log a warning about not having a system recovery console installed. Is this something I should do?

Thanks,

Tea,

Thanks for the info. So, does my log look clear? Everything is running a lot better. I would like to load a new system restore point if everything is clear.

Thanks for all of your help. I will definitely be sending a donation your way!

Hello there,

Yes, all looks good now.

Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox. Empty your Recycle bin and reboot your computer.

Here's a pretty easy way to do your system restore, in case you need one :

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it ( something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

You should definitely maintain a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or Outpost. I use Comodo on my own system and really like it. http://comodo.com
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Take care!

Tea,

Firefox is great! It seems a lot faster than IE.

I am running Bitdefender Internet Security 08. Will this interfere with Teatimer?

Thanks again for all of your help. It is great what all of you are doing for those in need of help!

Hello,

Glad to hear it. I use Firefox exclusively, and have for a while. I love it. If you want to fancy it up a bit go look at the themes they have available. They're small and they won't slow your system down. Also a little tip: Delete the IE icon from your desktop so that if anyone else uses your computer they won't be tempted to use IE.

Tea Timer should be just fine with BitDefender.

Have a great one, and you're most welcome!
