what anitivirus protection is (hopefully)on it, and other protection?

how does it connect to the internet?

If system restore doesn't work, the factory restore is always the surest way to fix things, and should be in everyone's game plan. Do you keep your data backed up? Have you saved driver updates? You can waste days trying to fix windows and still end up having to start over. If and when you do get it fixed, you can't be absolutely sure with a lot of the newer trojans that they are really gone. Someone should always prepare for that.

No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.
