Problem first started with my Computer Associates AntiVirus program picking up some infections and deleting some of them. I ran the spyware and virus scan, and then it got worse and worse. Pop-ups continusly popping up while attempting to get online, and also sometimes, even today after getting through all of the spyware and virus scans, all my desktop icons disappear and so does the taskbar at the bottom. There have definitly been some improvements. I found this website at work yesterday, so last night i first started to go through all the directions indicated. It originally took about 1 hour before i was able to get online. Now that everything has been scanned and installed, i am basically able to get on right away(compared to yesterday), also this made me remember, when turning on the computer the amount of time it take to go from power off to getting internet explorer open is probably double or triple than it used to be before these problems started. THere definitly seems like there are some issues with slowness when starting up.

While running the scanning programs, some programs said i had viruses and others said it was spyware. I really don't know how I am supposed to know what virus/trojan/spyware I have, I am not what you would call computer savy. I am still getting some pop-ups, one in particular that is the most annoying claims to want to add spyware removal software to the computer, and claims i have lots of issues on the computer(which i guess i do)

I would like to thank you in advance for all your help. I've been reading through some of the forums while at work and this website seems very informative and helpful. It definitly did get my computer to at least cooperate with me again, even though i still am getting pop-ups and slow starts. Please take note when you help me out, I may not 100% understand the directions unless they are explained step by step. From reading other forums, i sometime do not understand what is meant when telling someone how to fix something.

Thanks again,
Joe

Hi,

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.
After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
This will only take a few seconds.

Then, * Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

* Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Windows Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times.
Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi Miekiemoes,
Thanks for the quick response. I do have 1 question about the directions you gave me. What is mean by the 2nd part of this comment that you made? Am I supposed to disconnect from my wireless network?

"* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)"

Other than that I think the directions seems pretty straightforward.

Thanks for the help. I am at work now, I won't be able to get to try these directions until late tonight.

Hi,

When you select the safe mode option, you'll see two options there. Safe mode and safe mode with Networking.
So select safe mode there. (the first one)
Look for instructions/screenshot here: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm#02

Hi,

We are not finished yet...

Please perform next instructions in the right order...

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\authorizedapplications\list]
"C:\\WINDOWS\\TEMP\\win489.exe"=-
"C:\\WINDOWS\\TEMP\\win514.exe"=-
"C:\\WINDOWS\\TEMP\\win507.exe"=-
"C:\\WINDOWS\\TEMP\\win50A.exe"=-
"C:\\WINDOWS\\TEMP\\win54B.exe"=-
"C:\\WINDOWS\\TEMP\\winE0F.exe"=-
"C:\\WINDOWS\\TEMP\\winE03.exe"=-
"C:\\WINDOWS\\TEMP\\win566.exe"=-

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Then, * Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

Good evening, or I guess good morning to you when you read this,

Things are running better and better everytime i turn on the computer, below are the two new logs you asked for. While running the Malwarebytes program my computer associates virus scanner picked up an infection twice(different types of infection each time) and deleted them(supposedly).

Also with the Sygate firewall I have, it keeps asking me to allow or not allow certain things to come through the firewall. Do you have any hints about what I should be letting in and what not. Something things that sounded very obvious as not a problem I allowed through permantly, and other things that sounded weird i blocked permantly or block everytime it asks for a non-permanent block. The problem is don't know for sure if my choices are correct.

Are we getting close?

By the way, I like your dog, its huge!!! Is it some sort of Mastiff?

Hi,

Also with the Sygate firewall I have, it keeps asking me to allow or not allow certain things to come through the firewall. Do you have any hints about what I should be letting in and what not. Something things that sounded very obvious as not a problem I allowed through permantly, and other things that sounded weird i blocked permantly or block everytime it asks for a non-permanent block. The problem is don't know for sure if my choices are correct.

If you install Programs, perform updates, then you should allow it. Or if you run a start a certain program and your Firewall gives an alert as well, allow it. Only block it if you don't know it. If you're unsure, just google for the name to see with what it is related. You can use the searchterm: "Sygate+give here the name you want to research".

By the way, I like your dog, its huge!!! Is it some sort of Mastiff?

That's an American Staffordshire. Not that huge though

Your logs look clean again.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • For Platform, select "Windows"
  • For language, select your language
  • Read the License agreement and then Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement".
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Let me know how things are now.

Hi, I didn't get to the Java thing yet, but wanted to show you an example of what I just found on my computer as i came back from eating dinner. This just popped up and said it has been deleted. i've attached a word document with a print screen for you to see it. I am not sure but I think have seen some things pop up many times saying its being deleted, only to see it again. Maybe its just a name that is close to the original thing blocked.

I will do the Java thing in a few minutes.

How big is he/she? It looks huge compared to my 25 pound boston terrier/beagle mix.

Thanks,

joe

Hi,

Ok I did the Java thing, but i am not sure if I did something wrong. After rebooting, my desktop didn't have this:

Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

like your directions had, and therefore i have not double clicked on it when i turned my comp back on.

Also after the reboot, was my slowest startup in awhile.

By the way this is my 2nd response since your last response. I had put an attachment in my previous post I wanted you to see. Just making sure you don't miss it.

Thanks,

Joe

Here is another infection alert that popped up just now. This time i clicked on info link on the alert pop-up and below is the filename and location and inection. I have no idea if this stuff means anything to you, but it shows that i'm still infected with something. 2 messages ago I attached the printscreen of the alert pop-up and didn't realize i could click on info button. I assume this gives you more info than that attachment did.

Filename: A0035469.dll
Location: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{266C838D-FBFB-4B34-AEB1-8F1880FFA6B4}\RP383\
Infection: WIN32/Vundo.OS

Hi,

I really hope this is useful info. Here is the virus infection alert again. Slighty new filename but looks like same location. Every time the alert pops up lately, it says in the status column that its "Deleted"

Filename: A0035470.dll
Infection: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{266C838D-FBFB-4B34-AEB1-8F1880FFA6B4}\RP383\
Infection Win32/Vundo.OS

Thanks again,
joe

Hi,

What was found is present in your System Restore Points. This is normal if you were infected previously. To solve this, Flush your system restore points:
To do this, you have to disable systemrestore and enable it afterwards again.
(note: this will delete all your system restore points and malware that were present in it).

How to disable system restore in XP <= click me for instructions with screenshots
After you disabled System Restore.... Reboot.. and after rebooting, enable it again, so a new systemrestorepoint will be made. A clean one now!

Ok I did the Java thing, but i am not sure if I did something wrong. After rebooting, my desktop didn't have this:

Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Well, this all depends where you downloaded the file previously.
This is what it said in my instructions:

# Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.

This means, if you didn't save the installer previously on your desktop, then you won't find it there.

Computer seems to be running really well. I just turned it on and did the system restore thing you asked me to do. I am going to leave it on now and see if any new virus alerts pop up.

Regarding the Java, i think i remember when downloading it, that it said something about Java getting an icon on the desktop and i said yes to it. I am not sure how to make sure this Java version 6 is installed. I went into the C drive and into program files, but then there are a ton of files/folders and realized that I am stuck not know where to go to make sure it is installed. Please let me know what to do from here.

I will let you know if a virus alert pops up.

thanks,

joe

Just scan with HijackThis again and post the log in your next reply. Then I can see if you installed latest java properly
