Please help, I installed the new IE7 and when I turned my computer back on my desktop and taskbar went on the fritz. Now they are simply gone. The only way to get to programs is through ctrl+alt+delete and that's a pain. I want my start menu back HELP

Boot in safe mode-use the admin account to do a system restore back to a time just before the issue occurred.

Use the Task Manager to run "explorer.exe" (no path needed). That should bring back your desktop and start bar. If it does not, or you receive an error, please post that here.

If this works, tell post it back still so we can investigate what is stopping your explorer.exe from starting up at the boot time.

This step involves making changes in the registry. Always back up your registry before making any changes.

Go to Start Run and type: regedit
  • Click OK.
  • On the left side, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
  • Go up to File Export
    • Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
      Under "Filename" put RegBackup.
  • Choose to save it to C:\
  • Click save and then go to File Exit.
Click on the link below:

Scroll down to #195 and click "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar" in the right column. Save xp_taskbar_desktop_fixall.vbs to your desktop and double-click on it to run the script. Since the script modifies certain registry settings you may receive an alert from your anti-virus or any script blocking program. Ignore the warning and allow it to continue.
