Dear Members,

My Laptop with WinXP Home Edition os has been infected with numerous malware infections - IPWins, Graybird etc. I have followed all the instructions as mentioned in the "Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log".

Please help me to clean the infections. Unfortunately I have posted this in the incorrect forum and have lost three valuable days.

Sorry for the delay. if you are still having a problem, please do the following:
  • Download Combofix to your desktop.

  • Doubleclick combofix.exe

  • Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, and after reboot if it asks for one, combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a while so please be patient. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open called combofix.txt.

Post the contents of this log in your next reply along with a new hijackthislog.

Please do not post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask you to.

Hi Grinler,

Thanks for the reply. I am still having a problem with my laptop and need your expert help.

As you instructed, I downloaded and ran the combo fix ( without clicking on the combofix window later which would cause the system to hang as cautioned by you ). I tried it twice, each time I waited for 1 hr to complete the run but it didnt finish.

Please advise me how to proceed further.

Thanks
Bala

  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi Grinler,

Unfortunately my laptop has gone from bad to WORST. When I initially posted this topic, I had a trial version of KIS running on my machine and last week the trial period was over. As I am on a travelling job, I get only weekends to get back home and look at my laptop and this week when I was trying to do a Kaspersky online scan as per your advice, I noticed that the shortcut for my yahoo messenger has changed.

I tried to restore my system to a earlier date but couldnt do it. I tried to do a online scan but the kaspersky popup window wouldnt open. I even checked the settings to allow popup blocker but to no use.

Could you please provide me directions to clean up my machine and resolve the issue.

Sincerely
Yaro

Let's try this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply. If you have any problems with the logs, both can be found in C:\Deckard\System Scanner.

I am not seeing any infections. What makes you think you are infected? Did your AV software state that you were? IF so, it appears it stopped them from actually infecting your computer.

Your java, though, needs to be updated.

Update Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5' and press the 'Download' button. On the new web page, click the 'Accept License Agreement' button. Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform area just below the Accept button.

Hi Grinler,

I am able to make my javascripts to work again. As your instruction, I ran the Kaspersky online scanner ( it detected one virus and 2 suspicious objects ) and have attached the contents herewith.

Thanks

Hi Grinler,

Sorry for the delayed response. I have not seen any suspicious activity since then.

Thank you so much for all your help.

Please close this thread.
