Microsoft autoupdate of My Windows XP Home edition does not auto update even though the feature is turned on. When attempting to update manually at "support.microsoft.com" a message appears indicating to wait while my computer is being scanned for update requirements. After a minute or so scan fails indicating an error occured but gives a specific reason. There was a link indicating that activeX controls be authorized, which they are. I also disabled the firewall and virus software, but still received the scan error. I went into IE7 Internet options and verified privacy was medium and no sites were being filtered. I was able to locate several updates manually and install them without error. The problem appears to be during the scan. I have no problem with a second computer.

I think your registry permissions may be preventing you from installing properly. Did you try to reset the permissions?
