Where To Download Windows Updates?

Does anyone know where I could download Windows updates without going to www.microsoft.com. I tried updating them from windows Security Center but it doesn't work.

I can't get onto microsoft, google or Mozilla for some reason, and I've been wondering if its because I don't have the latest updates.
I ran a check to see if I have all the updates my computer needs and it came up with this:

Not having updates installed wouldn't stop you from going to sites, Windows updates are usually for exploits that hackers can use. If you can't get to Microsoft, Google or Mozilla you may have had your hosts file edited by a virus. Update your Antivirus and run a scan. If it doesn't repair your hosts file then you could overwrite it with the MVPS HOSTS File. There are no official mirrors for windows update (apart from the ones the real site uses). However there is a site called WindizUpdate that offers a plugin for firefox that scans for security updates like your one above and installs requires security updates.

Somehow I knew that there wouldn't be any other place to update windows, but I had to try.

There is nothing in my HOSTS file anymore, I actually had that fixed about a week ago now. I re-checked and it's fine.
I did the scan, no viruses. I also did a Spyware scan with AVG and it found 7 things, it deleted 2 of them and put the others in quarantine.

It won't let me go to the MVPS host site. I did get to the WindizUpdate site and I'm installing the updates now. Thank you :thumbsup:

I had someone come over last week to see if they could find anything (they work for some computer company as some kind of tech supervisor) and they said that it baffled them as to what could be blocking certain websites. He did a hijack log and the hosts file thing and found nothing. He said I'd probably have to reinstall windows to see if that would do anything.

I've been looking all over the place and it seems that a lot of people have the same problem but once someone helps them out, they never come back to say if it worked or not.

Do you get an error message in IE when you try to access the Windows Update Site?

Thank you for the link to the secure sites tutorial I tried all of the suggestions but none of them worked, darn it.

If try to go on to the internet through the IE Browser, the browser wont even come up. A box comes up that says: "Internet Explorer Has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

If I try to go on using Avant, the browser comes up but if I type in a address or try to go through a bookmark, the page just stays blank. It doesn't do anything or say anything. The little icon thing doesn't even move, nothing.

My primary browser is firefox version 2.0.0.9

I've tried downloading Opera to see if I could get onto sites that way but to no avail.

I checked to see if I had any Norten or Symantic? software installed and I even ran the uninstall plugin thing to get rid of any of it, if I had it on my comp.

I do however have/had Mcafee; I've tried uninstalling this. I ran the MCPR.exe uninstall tool as well. But when I do a windows search for "mcafee" I still have 33 mcafee folders or programs on my computer.

I'm on a network computer(2 Computers in the same house), is it at all possible that the main or host computer downloaded something or a setting got changed that would inadvertently have an effect on my computer?

Also whats strange is that I can't get onto yahoo.com but if I go to yahoo.co.uk the site comes up fine.

I'm not sure how your Firefox is acting through all of this. There is a neat extension called IE Tab, that allows you to download Windows updates in Firefox.

Here are a couple of things to try:

Go to the Control Panel then Network Connections.
Click once on your active Connection.
From the menu on the left, select Repair This Connection.
Try to connect to a site.

Is there any Proxy set or used?
Check to see if set to automatic:

In Firefox,
Go Tools/ Options/ Advanced/ click on the Network Tab, then click Settings.
Select the radio button that says Auto Detect Proxy Settings for all this Network.
Click Okay

In Internet Explorer,
Go to Tools/ Internet Options/ click on the Connections tab, then click on LAN Settings.
Select Automatically Detect Settings.
Click Okay twice.

If still no joy:

Click Start / Run / type in; cmd/ and at the black command screen type in; ipconfig /flushdns
and/or try:
Start / Run / type in; regsvr32 urlmon.dll
Click Okay.

If you still can't connect, there are some good tips in Dux Computer Digests IE Cannot Connect to Secure Sites.

Firefox does the same thing as IE and Opera does, I can't connect to certain websites. ie.: Mozilla.com, Microsoft.com, Msn.com, Yahoo.com, Youtube.com, Google.com and so on.
While other sites like this one I can access.

I'm on a Wireless Network, so I don't have any proxy settings set (at least I don't think the proxy settings have anything to do with wireless connections, I don't know anything about computers so I'm kind of lost on that one) .
I'm also not the one who set up my internet connection, so I don't know how to fix it, if I were to lose my connection, which is why I don't want to mess around with the network settings.

It won't let me connect to "Dux Computer Digests" :thumbsup: When I try to go to the page, it just says "connecting to www.duxcw.com....in the status bar.

After about 15 seconds trying to connect it comes up with this page:

"The connection has timed out

The server at www.duxcw.com is taking too long to respond.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

Sorry if I'm being a pain, it's been doing this since around Jan 20th of this year and it started out slowly with not being able to access a couple sites and now I can't get onto about 90% of the internet on any browser. It's just frustrating that there doesn't seem to be a fix for it.

I have faith though that someone will figure it out:)

I may have to do what was suggested to me before and completely reinstall windows to see if that fixes it. I just can't do it right now, because I have to have someone hook me back up to the internet, since I have no idea how to do that and the guy who does it for me works insane hours.

Just a random question. Have you cleaned your Cache, Cookies etc. lately? I found after a month of not clearing my cache some sites like Youtube and even quick Google would load incredibly slowly - if at all. I don't think this would have any effect but its worth a try :thumbsup:

Then again could be a stuffed up protocol.
-BTW what version of IE do you have?

Yep, done that. I usually do it every two to three days, just so it doesn't build up.

I'm have Version 7.0.5730.11 of IE.

The first time I've been on IE in probably a year is just recently to see if me not being able to get on certain websites was just happening in Fierfox, but alas no, it's every web browser I try.

Please read Using LSP-Fix to remove Spyware & Hijackers and download the LSP-Fix from it's download location.

LSP-Fix is a utility designed to remove and repair problems associated with a a type of software called a Layered Service Provider, or LSP. LSPs are designed to integrate directly into your TCP/IP layer, the protocol you use to communicate on the Internet, in order to manipulate data that is sent across it. The LSPs are installed in such a way that each LSP in the TCP/IP handler are chained together. If one of these LSPs is removed incorrectly, that chain could become broken, possibly removing your ability to connect to the Internet or a network.
Because you just want to fix a broken chain, click the Finish button, (designated by the green box in Figure 1. of the Tutorial).
LSP-Fix will automatically fix the LSP chain and hopefully restore connectivity back to the network.

Or you can try WinSock2 Fix, if that fix didn't work.
When you run it, click on ReG-Backup button first to backup the registry, and then click on the Fix button.

Sorry it's taken so long for me to respond, I've been working some crazy hours.

I tried both of them. LSP-Fix said there was nothing to fix. It came up with a box that said "No Changes Necessary"

I ran the other one too, but still nothing. This is so puzzling.

Thank you for all your help though, I'm sure this must be just as irritating for you guys as it is for us:)

I was actually able to get onto some of the sites this morning.

Our internet connection had gone out so we had to re-start the wireless internet box, I could get onto certain sites, like google and msn.com but only for about 20 seconds, as soon as I refreshed the page it went back to the same old "connecting to server" thing.

Could something on the other computer be blocking my access to certain sites or is it the wireless box? Maybe we will have to buy a new one.

How about, you go to Start and click Help and Support.

Then click Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems.

Then click Network Diagnostics and select all of the categories. Click Save Options.

Now click Scan your System
You can Save a copy of the scan.

The results of this scan could lead us to the problem.

Network Diagnostics gathers information about your computer to help you trouble shoot Network related problems, with your computer. The scans on your system are to check your Network Connectivity, and whether your Network-related programs and services are running.

We figured it out ourselves. We got a new Motorola box from Cox, our internet provider. I can now access all websites again.
