Ok, recently my cable internet connection seems to have tanked, The ethernet runs god awful slow but the wireless works fine. I plugged our laptop into the gateway modem to check it and the internet slows down to wireless speed on that. Both computers run a 500-800ms ping to go from my house to a city about 12-15 miles away.
I play MMORPG's, particularly EverQuest 2, and I have been getting a constant ping of 1000ms with 3000ms spikes. From my experimenting with the ethernet and wireless it looks to me to be a problem with my rented gateway modem but I wanted to be safe.... plus it would be good to know if I have anything bad on my computer.
My modem is a Netgear Wireless cable modem gateway CG814WG, if you need to know. I am renting it from comcast so if that is the issue it is a free fix.

Thank you,
Aedhan
