I can't exactly tell if this is a hardware problem, but I'm assuming. This isn't with my computer, but someone else's. What happens is when he turns it on...the loading works correctly. Windows seems as though its booting up perfectly, but when the desktop is supposed to appear, instead of it appearing...nothing but the mouse icon appears. Everything else is just black. Its not a problem with the monitor (we've checked with by connecting it to other monitors; the same thing happens). Any ideas as to what could be happening?

I doubt it it's hardware. Can you reboot and get into safemode? When you first boot up and see the black and white screen with all of the computer info on it, start tapping the F8 key and when asked select safemode.

What's the make and model of the computer? Do you have a XP disk or the recovery disk that came with it? Can you get into the BIOS?
