Hey folks, glad you are here to help us little people.

I'm trying to cleanse my mother in law's computer. When I start it up the desktop gets hijacked, and it's just a blue background with a a message that reads:

"Warning: Spyware threat has been detected on your PC. Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity. It is strongly recommended to install an antispyware software to close all security vulnerabilities. Antispyware software helps protect your PC against spyware and other security threats. CLICK HERE TO SCAN YOUR PC FOR SPYWARE..."

If you click anywhere on the desktop, an IE window opens with a push to buy a no-name antispyware package.

I get lots of popups purporting to inform me the computer is infected. Also if I CTRL-ALT-DEL, a dialog box tells me "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator."

Google searches tell me this is probably the Smitfraud virus, but I have tried Smitfraudfix and no dice. (Yes, I ran it in Safe mode.) All Smitfraud does is delete two files out of the system32 folder, ace16win.dll and msole32.exe, but they seem to regenerate when I restart and get infected again.

My MIL's computer used to only have the Norton suite as protection (it came preinstalled and she just activated that). I uninstalled Norton and a bunch of other free versions of security software she had piled on, and spent about 15 hours (and 70 dollars or so) getting her McAfee antivirus, Spysweeper, Zonealarm, AdAware, SpybotS&D, and have run other stuff too like Stinger, heck I can't remember the others. They did get rid of a lot of stuff, but that danged blue hijacked screen won't budge.

It's an HP machine, running XP, Autoupdate is on and XP is current.

I hope I did enough that now I can throw in the towel and post a HijackThis log. I hope I also post it correctly and not commit any bleeping faux pas.

Thanks in advance.
Jim, aka Metalhed

Hello there and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today.
Download Combofix to your Desktop.
Double click combofix.exe
Follow the prompts that are displayed.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.

Please download the latest version of SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) It is updated almost daily so it is important that you have the latest definitions.
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1, and press Enter.
A text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Post the Combofix log in your next reply with a fresh HijackThis log and the rapport.txt.

If you are pleased with the service I have offered, you may like to consider making a donation. Posted Image

First off, sorry for the delay ... some days I can't get over to my MIL's house.

I don't know if it matters or not, but at the end of Combofix's run, after it gives me the logfile, I don't get the Windows taskbar back (i can sit for a long time and it doesn't come back). I have to restart the machine to get it back.

Here are the files. (It's gonna be a lot of text.) Hope this helps.

By the way, I seem to have the desktop back, and I can use Task Manager again.

I'm not gonna assume the bugs are gone until you look at it again though!

Hello again,
Please print off a copy of these instructions, and also save them to a Notepad file on your desktop, so they are easily accessible.
We are going to boot into Safe Mode next, and there is no internet access.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep.
Then select Safe Mode from the list.
Make sure you choose the option without Networking Support.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again.
Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please include rapport.txt, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Thanks,
Charles

FYI, SmitfraudFix did delete the legit desktop background (no biggie, there's a lot of perfectly nice photos for backgrounds on this computer). I was not prompted to replace wininet.dll.

The computer seems to be running normally now, but just slow (then again, it's an older machine).

Here is the new hijackthis file, I'll have to post the smitfraudfix log as an attachment (bleepingcomputer says it is too long).

As you can see from the files, certain denizens of the household visit some interesting sites, but there's not much I can do about that.

Thanks for your continued help ... Jim aka Metalhed.

You are running MyWebSearch (or MyBar). Although not technically malware, it is thought to be bad by many experts and it will bring malware with it. There are safer alternatives available such as the Google Toolbar. My Web Search also known as the My Way Speedbar is the Internet Explorer toolbar part of the Fun Web Products suite of utilities such as Smiley Central, Cursor Mania, My Mail Stationary, My Mail Signature, PopSwatter, Popular Screensavers, and the My Way website portal. The toolbar allows easy access to search engine results and a 404 Error Redirector called My Total Search among other things to your browser. This is not to be confused with the IBIS Web Search toolbar. MyWay is a search toolbar that installs into Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, adding search functions and popup blocking. It reports your surfing activity anonymously to MyWay affiliates, helping them to serve targeted advertising to you. As a BHO, MyWay shares the memory that your browser uses, detects events, creates additional windows while you are surfing, and monitors your activity. When a new browser window is opened, MyWay will send a configuration request about 5k in size.
Although none of these products claim to be spyware, they do slow your computer down. All of the products use cookies to track usage, although they claim not to use cookies or anything else to track personally identifiable information. That being said, I would still recommend uninstalling the toolbar and other Fun Web Products if you feel your computer runs better without them. They are found by most spyware removal tools such as Spybot Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware.
If you want to get rid of this program, removal instructions can be found here.

Scan again with HijackThis and put a checkmark next to the following entry (if present):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ipbrltoa] C:\WINDOWS\system32\eagcxysp.exe

Then close all other windows - you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop - and click the Fix checked button.

Please run a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner.
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
Once the files have been downloaded click on Next.
Select a target to scan; click on My Computer.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete choose the option to Save as Text; they will be needed in your reply.

I'd like to see the Kaspersky log and a brand new HijackThis log in your reply.
Thanks,
Charles
