Recently, my computer has been slowing down and I have noted 100% CPU usage as well as multiple SVCHOST running. I would really prefer not to reinstall WinXP to resolve just to resolve this problem, but I need my computer to be at least close to normal.

Attached is my HIJACKTHIS LOG ... Urgent Assistance Please

Hello Da` Rudster

Welcome to Bleeping Computer!

Sorry about the delay. We're all volunteers here, and it's been very busy. If you still need help, please post a new HijackThis log to make sure nothing has changed.

Before posting the log, please make sure you follow all the steps found in this topic:

Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log <--link

And I'll be happy to take a look at it for you.

I also need to see a different type of log from Hijackthis:
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on "Open the Misc Tools section".
  • Next click on "Open uninstall manager".
  • Press the button 'save list'. It will open a Notepad file.
  • Place the content of that file here in your next reply.
Thanks, for your patience.

Hi Da` Rudster

Please better print out or copy this instructions/tutorial to Notepad.

Please run HijackThis again, click scan, and put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below, if still present:

O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} - http://www.bigfishgames.com/online/bejewel...aploader_v6.cab

Then close all other windows--you should only see Hijack This on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button, and EXIT Hijack This.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Plattform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "English".
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click "Continue".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

    Java™ 6 Update 2
    Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following: Viewpoint Media Player.

Please go HERE to run Panda's Posted Image ActiveScan
  • Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Posted Image button
  • A new window will open.
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Posted Image
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Posted Image to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the Posted Image button, then click the Posted Image button and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report. And a new HijackThis log.

DASOS,

all done as instructed, but only with minimal improvement if any. Since the computer appears to be free of viruses/malware, what do I do next?

Additionally, the time it takes for the computer to boot is ridiculous and appears to be worst than before. I know this may not be the correct thread/forum to address this issue, but I have also noted that there is sound that seems to be coming from the hard drive which is only heard when the computer is booting up.

My questions are like this ...

1) Are there any configuration problems that may be causing this issue, and how/where can I address this?

2) Is there a site (or utility) where I can benchmark my particular hard drive to evaluate if it is performing correctly?

3) Is there a site (or utility) where I can benchmark my particular CPU (processor) to evaluate if it to is performing correctly?

Thanks for any assistance provided.

 Da` Rudster

Hi Da` Rudster

First let me see the logs I’ve ask you to post, to make sure you are clean.

When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the button, then click the button and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report. And a new HijackThis log.

Hi Da` Rudster

1) Are there any configuration problems that may be causing this issue, and how/where can I address this?

2) Is there a site (or utility) where I can benchmark my particular hard drive to evaluate if it is performing correctly?

3) Is there a site (or utility) where I can benchmark my particular CPU (processor) to evaluate if it to is performing correctly?

Please first see here:

Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware

And if you still have problems, start a new topic here: Windows XP Home and Professional

Your comp looks clean.

Disable and Enable System Restore. You should disable and enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to disable and enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Next,

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet
