Hi shell5,

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums and thanks again for your patience.

1. We have to disable some of your protection since they may hinder with the fixes we have to make:

> SuperAntispyware:

Right-click on the shortcut from the system tray,
choose View Control Center (preferences/options),
on the General and Startup tab, uncheck,
Start SUPERAntispyware when Windows starts,
click Close to exit.

> Teatimer:

> Run Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and select Advanced Mode;
> On the left hand side choose Tools > Resident;
> Uncheck Resident Teatimer and click Ok (close Spybot).

You may enable both of them again once you're clean; I will let you know.

2. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZS

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

3. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Plattform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "English".
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click "Continue".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
4.

still have a slow sluggish system with delayed opening of applications, system freezing and extremely slow internet connections and email programs

Check Help! My computer is slow! and/or Computer and browser slowness are not always malware related and please follow all the instructions given.

5. But I prefer to dig some deeper as well:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply. If you have any problems with the logs, both can be found in C:\Deckard\System Scanner.
6. Finally run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Post the F-Secure report along with the DSS main/extra logs.

Hi again,

Followed all your instructions and will include logs. Only problem I have had is in using the F-Secure online scanner. Gets to the active x install OK then you click on Full Stystem Scan and it downloads then comes up with an error message that says:

"An error has cooured, please close scanner and browser and try again (1d:24)"

Tried again but got same message again.

good luck with logs

Hi shell5,

Sorry for the delay. I will be helping you now.

Your log shows a few signs of malware but they don't appear to be active. We will run some other checks, but it looks like the main reason for slowness is a lack of enough RAM. If you just ran Windows and a few small programs you could get by OK with what you currently have. When you add Norton Internet Security, that is resource intensive, you eat up a lot of that, then gradually adding more programs that nowdays demand a lot of resources makes it even worse. 512 MB is the recommended minimum to run XP and such programs--more is better.

Another source of slowness could be because of the large hosts file you have installed to block malware sites. Please refer to the tutorial, The Hosts File and what it can do for you.

NOTE: It is important to note that there have been complaints of system slowdowns when using a large hosts file. This is usually fixed by turning off and disabling the DNS Client in your Services control panel under Administrative Tools. The DNS client caches previous DNS requests in memory to supposedly speed this process up, but it also reads the entire HOSTS file into that cache as well which can cause a slowdown. This service is unnecessary and can be disabled.

If you cannot afford more RAM at this time I have a suggestion or two that might help but we want to deal with whatever malware may be present first.

Also, in your first log, you appeared to have the Ashampoo firewall installed, but now it appears you have uninstalled it. Can you confirm this? You didn't need it as you seem to have Norton's firewall already installed and enabled. It is never a good idea to have more than one firewall installed at one time. Not only will it cause a slowdown, but it can make your system very unstable as well. The reason I ask is because Ashampoo left a service behind that you don't need so we will fix it. Removing the service won't make an impact on your computers overall speed but I am wondering if you asked for help with slowness when you tried to install Ashampoo firewall. If you can describe what happened, that would be helpful. Only do the following if you have in fact uninstalled Ashampoo firewall:

Click on Start, the Run.

Copy the following bold text and the paste it into the Run box:

SC delete ASFWHide

Now go to Add/Remove programs via Control Panel and uninstall the following:

Browser Optimizer Dcads

Reboot your system.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

The thing about people

Hi there,

Thanks for the response and advice.

Yes I did remove Ashampoo Firewall along with alot of other un-necessary stuff, got rid of lots of un-used programs, cleaned up old files with CC Cleaner and removed alot of stuff not properly removed from un-installs, copied nearly all photos to disk to save space etc, now just to talk kids into letting clean up their music/ipod files! Computer generally running a bit better now, still slow when on internet between pages etc, email program working faster.

This computer is now 5 years old at least so should be in retirement and we cannot afford to upgrade memory at the moment, though I know it desperately needs it.

Did things as requested and am including logs in this reply, I stuffed up with first Combo Fix scan, forgot to download microsoft stuff but will include log and new HJT log, ran combo fix again after microsoft stuff downloaded so will include that small log as well.

Looking forward to your next suggestions.
