Hi, when running IE7 on my home PC, after displaying the third web page, it stops responding. Had to close IE7 7 submit error report to Microsoft. PC itself does not hang. HJT log follows:

Hi milkchoc,

Apologies for the delay as the forums are extremely busy.

I see no sings of malware present in your log. I suspect your problem is because of some buggy HP software, but since you have not mentioned running any other scans, please do the pre-cleaning steps in the Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log. This way we can double-check that it is not a malware issue and I will need to see a fresh HijackThis log. Be sure to let me know if any malware is found by the scanners and be sure to install Spybot Search & Destroy, as I would like to use it's startup manager to troubleshoot the issue and HJT is not meant for that.

I solved a similar issue by disabling the HP Software Updater on my own system. Once the precleaning scans are done please do the following, and let me know the results:

Open Spybot Search & Destroy.

Click the Mode menu and make sure there is a checkmark next to Advanced mode.

Click Tools (bottom left) then System Startup.

Look for the HP Software Update entry. Click in the box next to it to take the checkmark out.

Close Spybot, reboot and then test to see if this solves the problem.

Please note that this is a temporary troubleshooting measure. When HP Software Update is disabled, your system will not check HP website automatically for updates to HP's software. You will need to decide if you want to leave it disabled and update manually, or contact HP Support. Depends on the result of this experiment, so please let me know if it helped.

Thanks Papakid. I have done those presleaning scans regularly. Ad-Aware 2007 found some cookies everytime, which I deleted; Spybot scans (after updating and immunising) were clean.

Have disabled HP software updater (which FYI gives me an error message everytime I tried to download their recommended updates) and IE7 is more stable. Will test for a few more days and post an update here.

Any suggestions on the failed updates with HP? I sent feedback to them everytime, but no replies.

Have a great week ahead!

Hi milkchoc,

Sincerest apologies, I was mistaken when I said there are no signs of malware in your log--I missed seeing an entry that indicates a tricky bit of malware present that could be the real source of the instability and perhaps would explain the problem with HP updates. It also may attack your protection programs--have you had any problems updating Norton's Antivirus? BTW, I should have emphasized running the online antivirus scans in the Prep Guide, not just Spybot and Ad-Aware. Did you run any of those? If my suspicions are correct, an antivirus is better designed to deal with this, not anti-spyware/malware such as Spybot. However, do not worry about running those particular online scans, we'll run another.

Please read the instructions that follow carefully and perform them in the exact order given.

Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply. If you have any problems with the logs, both can be found in C:\Deckard\System Scanner.
Please post only the three logs I've asked for and let me know how the system is running now.

The thing about people

is they change

when they walk away.--Mipso

Apologies for the delay.

One thing that shows in your DSS log is that the hard drive that Windows is installed on is almost full. You need a certain amount of free space, 15% or more, on your drive for everything to work correctly. I strongly suggest you free up some space by uninstalling any programs that you don't use and if you have a large number of files that do take up quite a bit of space, such as music, video and photos, etc., move the ones you want to keep to another drive or removable media (such as CD/DVD) and then delete those files from your C: drive.

After you do that, please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Copy the bolded text below, then click on START>Run, paste it into the Run box and Hit Enter:

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

You should see a shortcut file by the name of csrss.lnk. Right click this file and chose Properties. Under the Shortcut tab there should be a file path to the actual executable file in the Target: field. Please copy that entire file path and post it back here in your next reply.

Then click on Find Target: --the csrss file should be highlighted in what ever folder it is in. If it's not there, don't be concerned, just let me know. Right click on this file and chose Properties. Under the General tab, please post back the file size and the creation and modified dates, along with any attributes.

Please do not delete any files yet unless asked.

Updating Java:
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.

Uninstall the following:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
Java™ 6 Update 3

Then Download and install the newest version from here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Finally, I know you've run the Kaspersky online scan before--please do so again and post it's log along with a new HijackThis log.

The thing about people

is they change

when they walk away.--Mipso

Hi I tried to free up space as much as possible.

The Target field in the csrss.lnk properties is blank, clicking find target did not result in any action.

Removed older versions of Java and installed the latest from their website.

OK, those files are legit and copies of a critical system file, so be sure not to try to delete any of them. There is a malware file that uses that particular file name, but it will not be in any of those particular folders.

Looks like the file the shortcut links to is gone so you don't have an active infection as I had thought you might. It is safe to delete the csrss.lnk shortcut file in the C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder--it's just a leftover.

Kaspersky just shows some malware that is backed up to System Restore, but those aren't active either. So it looks like the issues you described are caused by something besides active malware--could be any number of things, including damage by the malware when it was active. I have some other things to attend to at the moment, so will have to get back to you on some ideas and some other things you need to do. I suspect Norton may have been corrupted.

In the meantime post a new HijackThis log after you have deleted the shortcut file.

The thing about people

is they change

when they walk away.--Mipso

Apologies for the long delay.

As mentioned earlier, I don't think there is any active malware present that we can see. The first log you posted here shows that you were heavily infected with some serious malware that can cause much damage that is very difficult to troubleshoot. There is a good chance that Norton is corrupted and possibly other problems. You should consider a reformat and reinstall of Windows. It's not a quick and easy fix but I believe will save you time in the long run.

If you want to go that route let me know as there would be no need to continue this thread. If you want to continue, let's uninstall Norton for the time being to see if it is causing this problem. There appeared to be problems with F-Secure's online scanner, evidently related to whatever is causing IE to hang.

Before we proceed, be advised that:

1. We will uninstall Norton using Symantec's removal tool only as a temporary measure--if you like and want to keep Norton to get your money's worth from it, you can reinstall it later. We will install AVG antivirus in it's place so you will be protected. Do you have a current subscription to Norton? If you do not or if Norton is not legally licensed to you, then I would suggest ditching it. Versions of Norton prior to 2007 are terrible resource hogs, so you might want to consider switching anyway.

Also, since you are using Noroton Internet Security, when you uninstall it, you will also lose your firewall. We will turn on the Windows firewall in the meantime, and I will recommend some freeware replacements later if you decide to switch.

2. If you do want to keep Norton, be sure to locate your installation CD/setup files and Product key, as mentioned in the webpage I'm about to link you to, before uninstalling.

1. Print out or save all instructions to Notepad or other text editor document so you will have them to refer to as you will need to go offline to prerform much of the following instructions.

2. Download AVG Free and save it to your desktop.

3. Download the Norton Removal Tool and save it to your desktop as instructed here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...&view=docid

4. Shut down any programs you may have open and disconnect from the internet. If you are on high-speed connection, physically unplug from your computer.

5. Run the Norton Removal Tool. Reboot when asked and it is a good idea to reboot again for good measure.

6. START> Control Panel> Security Center. Toward the bottom, click the Windows Firewall link and turn it on.

While you are in Security Center, you may want to enable monitoring of your firewall and antivirus. The DSS log shows monitoring is turned off. If you turned monitoring off yourself, don't worry about it, but this could have been turned off by the malware you had on your system.

7. Install AVG Free. Reboot.

8. Reconnect to the internet and update AVG. Then run a full system scan and let me know if anything was found.

9. Surf around and let me know if the IE hanging is still there.

10. Please run Deckard's System Scanner again, this time using these instructions:

Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste the following into the Run box & click OK.

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

A window will open. Click on Check All, then click Scan!.

When it has finished, Deckard's System Scanner will open two Notepad files: main.txt and extra.txt- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Let me know how it goes and the answers to my questions.

Hi Papakid,

My Norton came with the PC and the subscription has expired. I only use their "intelligent updater" to update virus defs. My other PC uses AVG and I am happy to switch. Will follow your instructions to remove Norton and replace with AVG and Windows firewall. Be back to you with results in a few days time.

Many thanks.

Hi,

I'll have to get back with you later on some more comments and advice--still not seeing any obvious malware. Are you still having the same problem browsing--any improvement with Norton gone?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

IE7 still hangs after a few views (it hung after I posted my last entry  ). Am thinking of deleting and reinstalling IE7; alternatively try another browser such as Firefox or Safari.

Some other observations:

(This may not be the right forum but it may have an effect on my IE7 problem) Every time I start up Word 2007, the application does not load but goes into "Configuration" mode, Showing a window with "Please wait while Microsoft configures Word 2007" and a status indicator. I had to wait about 2 minutes before the Word document window opens. This does not happen with Excel, PowerPoint or Publisher.

Should I clear all the past System Restore points as well and scan with Kaspersky again?

Many thanks and have a great week.
