Hi,
You've helped me lots with my computer problems. My Mom has complained about her system running slow and I'm suspicious of the possibility of spyware or hijackers of some sort being inside her computer. So I've come to the place I know and trust for help. I just downloaded HJT and did a scan which I've posted below, for a start, to see if anything looks suspicious to you.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Your log looks clean.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Thanks for checking the HJT log. Any suggestions as to why the system would run so slowly or what I could check? Last thing installed was Norton Antivirus 2005. Would it be adviseable to reinstall this. There isn't anything else installed like games or something that would be running in the background that would be a resource hog, that I'm aware of anyway.

No, it will consume the same resources.

I missed one entry:

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

resource hog

You can fix these:

RealPlayer running at Startup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself

Windows Messenger running at Startup
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
you will also need to set it not to load in Windows Messenger itself to keep it from resetting itself

MS Office running at Startup
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
Go to Start --> All Programs --> Startup --> right click on Microsoft Office and click Delete

Maybe this too. Nikon View 5 - for transferring pictures from Nikon digital cameras.
O4 - Global Startup: NkvMon.exe.lnk = C:\Program Files\Nikon\NkView5\NkvMon.exe
Go to Start --> All Programs --> Startup --> right click on NkvMon and click Delete

You will still be able to start them manually if you need them.

Also you can defragment your HDD.
