Hey guys! Nice of you to offer help!

I got a security alert from my Norton Protection Center about two W32.Virut.W infections. I ran the full system scan and it said that everything was ok. But in the security history they remain in the unfixed security risk folder.
I also ran a full Lavasoft Ad-Aware scan and it didn't find the virus.
I've also run the Dr.Web Cure It, a microsoft malicious software remover and the AVG Win32/Virut remover and every single one came up blank.
Yet they reamain in the Norton Security History as unfixed...

In the details it says that there is one "install.exe" in the folder c:\users\joakim\appdata\local\mozilla\firefox\profiles\8ream171.default\cac he\7f693ef8d01
And another "install.exe" in c:\users\joakim\desktop\call of duty 4.exe
When i search for the file in the firefox folder it's not there...

Here's my HijackThis log:

Hi and welcome,

Sorry for the delay.

If you still need help, please follow through with below:

1.) don't run that call of duty program -- if "install.exe" is imbedded -- it will most likely run -- which will spread virut.
If you spread virut -- this will result in a format because virut cannot be properly fixed.
Virut infects almost all exes including those burried in zipped folders.
Trying to remove the virus normally results in a corrupted program because virut scatters itself all through the files making removal/repair much more difficult.

If you got that app from a crack site -- is almost 100% chance it is infected.
don't download stuff from crack sites!

Lesee if we can get this.

2.) Empty your Internet cache files.

Easy way:

Download ATF Cleaner
  • Right-click ATF-Cleaner.exe and choose "run as administrator".
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser, do this also:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Next:

Post fresh hijackthis log

Next:

Scan "call of duty 4.exe" on your desktop here:

http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html

Copy/paste results.

Next:

I am hoping Norton is going nuts steady because it sees the desktop all the time (since you are there) so it flags steady.

I want to see an online scan:

Using Internet Explorer please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click "I accept"

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save report button.
  • Call it Kaspersky.txt
  • Expand the arrow beside "file types" and save as .txt file.
    http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/s...Kas-Savetxt.gif
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
note*
Normally I recommend disabling onboard antivirus to do scan --- In this case I would rather not.
Scan will be slower but I want the resident on steady so less chance virut running off --

*Note2
If you have Internet Explorer 7 installed:
If you have trouble getting past the initial download you may need to use the "zoom" tool at bottom right of the scanner window and increase it to 125% to see and press the "accept" button.
Page will reload and you should be able to carry on scan.

If log is a monster -- zip it please and attach it.

Thanks
I'll have an order of massive trojan attack please with a side order of rootkit and virus dip.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll perform the recommended tasks.

But there is one thing that confuses me, when I try to find the infected files by following the path Norton gives me, they're gone.

And the the .exe that starts the Call of Duty 4 game is called "iw3sp.exe" and not "call of duty 4.exe"

Ah well, I'm just a little upset that the effin computer won't do what I tell it to do. I'll try to get the scans done as soon as I can...

Best regards, Joakim

Hi,

Long as you have firefox closed ATF-Cleaner should take care of the infected cache.
Those files are normally hidden and unless you do an advanced search (tell system to search hidden files) windows search won't find them.

I should see the files in the Kaspersky log if they are present.

Ah well, I'm just a little upset that the effin computer won't do what I tell it to do.

I'm a bit confused what you mean --
Lots of programs giving you errors?

Haha!

Don't mind my rants, I had another virus on my laptop and i'm just a little mad at the world.

Kaspersky is scanning right now...

Hi,

Thanks for the logs.

Kaspersky online scan scans everything whereas Norton does not.
Generally by default Norton does not scan system restore and certain file types.
You can check in the virus scanner options what the excluded file types and folders are.
It is likely set to use "smart scan" or similar rather than "All files".

Speaking of antivirus ---
I see you have 2. Avast and Norton.
Really should get rid of one for better performance.
having 2 antivirus does cause conflicts.

-- Can't find "call of duty 4.exe" ..
KAV didn't flag it either. Unknown to me if it is actually there or not.

Might need to show hidden files.
How to view Hidden files/folders.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-see-hidden-files-in-windows/
don't forget to hide files/folders when we are finished.

See that file now?

---------------

Are you still getting alerts from Norton?
I wonder if the alerts were referring to files in system restore but showing where files origionally were ..

Please follow instructions here to reset system restore:
http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebas...icle/17803.html

When you create the new restore point -- Norton should yell if something is still present.

---------------

Those 2 files you scanned --
I *think* those flags are huristic (paranoid) results -- and they are likely not a threat --
Since the game has to connect to a server for you to play it -- it would have similar code in it as a backdoor.
The one file (iw3sp.exe ) appears to be a patched version of the origional so you can play the game without inserting cd --- correct?
From official site I hope?

-------------------

Let me know how system is running after you uninstall one of the antivirus programs and reset system restore -- If you kept Norton -- let me know if it still tags those earlier detections.
also let me know if "call of duty 4.exe" appear on desktop after making your system show all hidden.

Thanks
I'll have an order of massive trojan attack please with a side order of rootkit and virus dip.
Pre-course order of fresh spyware salad please with a side order of polymorphic dressing.
And to drink...a nice tall glass of adware!

For dessert; can I have a bowl of the freshest worms you have please?.

Never Give Up!

Thanks for the reply

When I get a virus I always set Norton to scan all files. As for the two AV-programs, I installed Avast! to see if it could find and remove the virus.
But it's gone now, thanks for the heads up!

I used the Hidden files/folders feature when I searched for the files manually, but when I followed the file paths there was nothing to be found...

It doesn't matter what I do, the W32.Virut.W still remains in the Unfixed security risks. I think Norton is janking my chain...
I have yet to see any affects from the virus, I only know about it since Norton told me.

Files in system restore seems like a plausible explanation. But why would Norton still have the virus under Unfixed threats?
It must have been fixed at some point if the virus is just in the System restore?

As for the Call of Duty game, it's all on the up and up. I just hate switching cds all the time.

I'll upload a screenshot of the Norton Security History. Seeing as I don't have the english version I have translated the words.
All the technical terms may not be correct, but I think you'll still understand.

Best regards, Joakim

Hi,

Thanks for the screenshot.
I asked one of my collegues who uses Norton --
We're thinking those items are just history --
At time of detection Norton could not heal, quarentine or delete the files --
Since you cannot find them, kaspersky come up clean, Avast says clean, norton says clean -- I'm pretty sure you are OK.
That particular virus is very well detected now and any one of those scans would have found it -- and you would have KNOWN if it was spread.
I think you may have at the time deleted the files back in december.
Looks like at the time Norton had caught it -- you had downloaded that game using FireFox and saved file to desktop.

Norton still cannot resolve them -- since they no longer exist.
Lucky you are -- since this virus normally results in a format if it was allowed to run.

In the Security history window
At the right side where alert details are Click "more details".
Under actions click "remove from history"

Repeat with second entry.

While researching I found your thread at another forum here:

Who do you want to continue to work with? This forum or techguy?
I ask because it takes alot of time on these logs and not much point having 2 helpers working on same log.

Let me know please what you want to do.

Thanks for the reply

I certainly hope it's just in the history, I would hate to have to format the drive. Seeing as no AV could detect it seems like the most reasonable explanation.

About the two threads, a couple of years ago I had a virus and tried to use forums like this, but after several attempts I didn't get a single answer. So I guess I had some bad experiences and just wanted to be sure I got a reply.
It seems like I've chosen two very good forums for this attempt and got answers on both. If I've caused any inconvenience i apologize. I truly appreciate your help and I think it's great that there are people who will offer help like this.

As I see it, there is really nothing more to do. If you think there is something else I can do, I will do it. But if you consider this matter resolved; Thank you ever so much for you help, it has been truly appreciated.

Best regards, Joakim

Hi,

Sorry for delay. My internet has been acting up.

I'm reasonably sure you are ok.
Out of 3 scanners and noone finding virut -- pretty darn sure it is not there.
It is a well detected infection and you would KNOW if you had it. It normally trashes programs and antivirus cannot clean it properly for the most part because of the damage the virus does.

Not sure if you use p2p programs or not -- if so ..
Take this as a lesson learned --- and a close call not to forget too soon.
Many programs/files downloaded from p2p sites, crack sites and so on are nothing but malware for the most part.
Keep in mind downloading from these networks --- you are downloading from unknown sources --- therefore untrusted.

Be careful out there!

I can understand wanting to post in a few forums -- I just stumbled upon that other post doing research.
If you need the forums again though --- when you do get a reply at one -- post in the others you are getting help then the duplicates can be closed. Just helps us keep things tidy and speeds up response time for other victims.

I imagine your other helper has or will give you some prevention info ---
I'll post a few links here as well.

Do make sure any programs listed are in fact Vista compatable before installing any.

Take care & surf safe!
