My computer is infected with a virus. I use Windows XP Media Edition, and I can't operate my computer unless it is in safe mode. When I try to get to my Task Manager by Ctl+Alt+Delete, I get a warning message that says that Task Manager has been disabled by the Administrator. I constantly get little pop-ups from Windows Security Center that says TrojanDownloader.XS has infected my computer. I do not have internet access, because my provider has shut it down to prevent the spread of the virus. I am having to use my friend's computer to do this. Also, I have PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Anti-Virus and have run it several times and tried to repair the virus, but so far it has not done anything to stop it. When I run the software, here are the 15 viruses that it has found: Adware.Starware, Adware.ActiveSearch, Adware.404Search, Trojan.Adclicker, Adware.Vundo, RogueAntiSpyware.WinPerf, Adware.CnsMin, Application.Absolute_Key_Logger, Application.Activity_Monitor, Adware.Weird_On_The_Web, Application.AceSpy, Trojan.EShopee, Trojan.Popuper, Dialer.Aconti, Adware.Adbreak.

Also, here is my HiJackThis! Log. If anybody can possibly help me in any way, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance, and let me know if I need to include any more information.

Hello Anton Chigurh,

NOTE: If you have downloaded SmitfraudFix previously please delete that version and download it again! Also delete C:\rapport.txt

Please download SmitfraudFix

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of the SmitfraudFix report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

First of all, thanks for getting back to me, I really appreciate it. Second, I ran SmitfraudFix and then tried to restart back into normal Windows, but it would not boot up in normal Windows, it froze up when loading, so I rebooted back into safe mode and ran HijackThis again. So, here are the logs you asked for:

Hello Anton Chigurh,

I see Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now, if you did not install it.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

If you uninstalled, please navigate to and delete the following folders
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

*******************************************

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

Next, we're going on a file hunt.
Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders' and deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)'.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following files/folders in bold (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiuser32.dll <==file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rxjddnvj.exe <==file
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\cfsfaxuh.dll <==file

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Autocomplete Forum History.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all including cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer to the Normal Mode, post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

I did everything that you said to do, but when I went to delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\rxjddnvj.exe i got an error message saying it Cannot Delete rxjddnvj.exe: Access Is Denied, but I was able to delete the other two programs you said.

As for my computer, it seems to be working a little better, because I was able to boot up into normal mode. It was still pretty slow, and I still get pop up messages from Windows saying that my computer still is infected with spyware. But, it does seem to work a little quicker. Here is myu new HijackThis log:

Hello Anton Chigurh,

I did everything that you said to do, but when I went to delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\rxjddnvj.exe i got an error message saying it Cannot Delete rxjddnvj.exe: Access Is Denied, but I was able to delete the other two programs you said.

The reason you could not delete the file is that none of the Hijackthis fixes worked!
All the malware is still on your computer.
The reason the HJT fixes are not working is that you either left a browser/explorer windows open while doing the fixes or you had a registry protector (like Spyware Doctor) running.

So we will try again.

To disable Spyware Doctor from running on your system startup:
1. First, disable the OnGuard Tools. This way, when you exit Spyware Doctor, these tools won't stay resident in the background.
2. Click the "Settings" button on the left side.
3. Click the "Startup Settings" link.
4. Uncheck "Run at Windows Startup".
5. Click the "Apply" button.

This time make sure you close the browser and explorer windows.

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

The computer is finally running pretty good now, so far it's been fine after following your directions and running the programs you said. Although, I still cannot run Task Manager, everytime I hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete, I get the error message saying "Task Manager has been disabled by the administrator" But other than that, the computer seems to be fine. Here are the logs you asked for:

Hi Anton Chigurh,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

I think you still have some malware on your computer so we will run ComboFix.

You need to disable your AVAST Antivirus and Spyware Doctor before running ComboFix, as they will prevent it from running.

to disable avast antivirus:
Right click on the avast! icon in system tray (looks like this: Posted Image) and choose (Stop On-Access Protection)

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Be sure to install the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet. <== IMPORTANT

Post the ComboFix log.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Did everything you said, and so far my computer seems to be running fine, I tried task manager and it was able to come up, which is very encouraging for me. Here is the ComboFix log:

Hello Anton Chigurh,

You have some suspicious files we need to check.

Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Go to next site: http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:
C:\wpohl.exe

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Save the results in notepad.

Perform the same for next files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fnhoje
C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN44.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN43.tmp
C:\2013679225

Once scanned, copy and paste the results also in your next reply.

NOTE: I usually enter my email address at virus total so they can send me the scan results. They usually only take a couple minutes to reply.
You can copy/paste the results of scan results here.

I ran the files through the program, and it worked for C:\wpohl.exe and C:\2013679225, but when I tried it for the other three: C:\WINDOWS\system32\fnhoje, C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN44.tmp, C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN43.tmp, I got a white screen that says "0 bytes size received / Se ha recibido un archivo vacio" before it would even start scanning. But here are the results for the two that worked:

Hello Anton Chigurh,

Click Start, then Run and type Notepad and click OK.
Open notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the code box below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wyadd.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN44.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN43.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fnhoje
C:\wpohl.exe

DirLook::
C:\WINDOWS\fchwcfti

Name the Notepad file CFScript.txt and Save it to your desktop.

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Hello Anton Chigurh,

Your log looks clean! Good job on the cleanup!

Uninstall ComboFix, go to to Start > Run & type in ComboFix /u
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete any of its related folders and files (Qoobox
VundoFix Backups, Avenger, Deckard, _OTMoveIt), reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Please read and follow How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!
