I wonder if someone can explain the following question to me in simple terms as I am not very computer literate, just curious how things work.My laptop runs Vista Home Premium with 1GB RAM,and I've had it for about 5 months.I have Norton360 on it.It normally takes just under 2 minutes to start up,i.e.until I get the Welcome Screen and the sidebar on the screen.Sometimes,it starts up in 1 minute and this can be at any time of the day.The difference seems to be the time from from the Windows logo appearing(approx.45 secs. in both the above cases) and the welcome screen/sidebar appearing. In the 1 minute start, the time from the Windows logo to the welcome screen/sidebar is only 15 secs.I run CCleaner at the end of every session I have on the computer,I work it wirelessly, and have BT Broadband.I am not complaining about startup time, just curious as to why the difference.Sorry to be so long-winded,just trying to give as much info as possible.

It's difficult to tell what's causing this without a tool like BootVis (don't even know if it'll work on Vista) - but I'd expect that it's likely to be the Norton 360 (IMO) because of the many features that are built into it.

I'd suggest going to Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools, and then click on Manage Startup Programs on the left. Then disable the Norton stuff and see how long it takes to boot. Don't forget to turn it back on tho' - you don't want to be surfing the net unprotected.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

I have the Knack. **  If I haven't replied in 48 hours, please send me a message. My eye problems have recently increased and I'm having difficult reading posts. (23 Nov 2017)FYI - I am completely blind in the right eye and ~30% blind in the left eye.<p>If the eye problems get worse suddenly, I may not be able to respond. If that's the case and help is needed, please PM a staff member for assistance.

Thank you very much for your reply.Tried what you suggested but it makes no difference.I still get varying start up times.I looked at BootVis on Google, but as you say,it is not for Vista. Thanks again.
