I am using Windows XP Professional

I've got an unusual problem. I noticed a couple of days back that i couldn't view my hidden files. I went to tools - folder options - view and clicked on show hidden files and folders as usual. But i couldn't see the files. I tried again a couple of times..restarted my computer but it didn't work. I know the files are still there because i checked the properties of the folder. I've never heard of anyone having this problem before so i am really stumped. Can anyone please help me out?

What do you mean when you say "I know the files are still there because i checked the properties of the folder."?

Is it a problem with just this one particular folder? Can you see hidden files in other folders on the computer? Also is this computer part of a network? If it is networked you might try sharing that particular folder and trying to view it on a different computer just in case it is a problem with the computer you are on.

What i was trying to say is that folder has over 100 files and is more than 2 GB in size. I just can't view the files because they are hidden and when i select show all hidden files it does not work.

No i can't see any hidden files on the PC. Its not just one folder.

And the computer is not part of a network.

Hi Sir Chirag,

Try this: Click Start >My Computer > Tools > Folder Options >View. Check "Show hidden files and folders", uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types". Click "Apply to all folders" >Apply then OK.

Hello Falu,

I've tried that already but it has no effect whatsover. The weird thing is after doing all this when i click on folder options > view again it goes back ' do not show hidden files and folders inspite of me checking show hidden files and folders and clicking apply and then OK previously.

Anything else i can try? Like i said i've never heard of this problem before and i dunno what to do.

This involves a Registry Edit!!! Backup your registry before making any changes!!!

Open regedit
Navigate to (in the left hand pane): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden
Look for the "Type" entry (in the right hand pane). It's data should read "group" (without the quotes).
If it does, close it all without changing anything and post back here.
If it doesn't, right click on the word "Type", select "Modify", then type in "group" (without the quotes) into the Value Data field and Click OK.

Dunno if this'll require a reboot or not.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

I'm out of ideas here.

SFC.EXE /SCANNOW may help - but it may not http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/43051/how-to-use-sfcexe-to-repair-system-files/

A repair install of XP probably would help, but it's a lot of work for just this one issue:
- if you've got IE7 installed, read this first: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=917964
- then use this for the actual repair: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

But there's not many options after that (besides formatting the hard drive and freshly installing Windows).
