Cannot Load Explorer (previously, Auto Shutdown Behaviour)

I have a problem. My situation right now is that Windows XP (updated to service pack 2) does not load properly.

My initial problem was that I was suddenly getting a "Services and Controller App has encountered a problem and needs to close" error on Windows startup.

When I closed this dialog, I then received a system shutdown error: "This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM." Also, the message: "Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly."

After doing some reading, I managed to call up the Windows Task Manager prior to closing the first error dialog, invoked "shutdown -a" and was able to enter the CMD shell. From there, I installed Norton Antivirus (which I didn't have before!) and also ran the Avast virus tool.

Somewhere along the way I got a blue screen and had to reboot. Now, when Windows loads, I get a blank desktop. I am no longer getting a crash in "Services and Controller App". But I cannot see the Start button. I can invoke the Task Manager, but when I type in Explorer, the system bar at the bottom launches for a few seconds, the system tray loads, and then it promptly disappears from the screen again. So I cannot access Explorer or the start menu. I can only work from the CMD shell.

Also, another problem is that I cannot invoke Safe Mode while booting up. I hit F8 repeatedly, but nothing happens, so it seems that it has been disabled somehow.

The most obvious problem is the fact that Explorer keeps disappearing on me. Any ideas on where to begin?

It appears that I'm still infected. I ran McAfee Stinger but it's coming up clean.

Can you try running this in normal mode and post the log. It may clear some functionality.

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
