Hello,

My Internet Explorer began running very, very slow tonight, and then started opening new windows all on its own. Most of these new windows were for products to remove viruses. I have Symantec, and it detected numerous threats that it was unable to delete or quarantine. Many of the threats were titled "Downloader", and a couple were titled "Trojan.metajuan". I saw a thread on this site about dealing with a Trojan virus, and Combofix had been recommended, so I have downloaded and run both Combofix and HijackThis. The problem has been getting progressively worse, so much so that just doing these things and then registering on this site to post on the forum has taken a matter of hours. The Internet Explorer keeps stalling out, then I have to start over. I've pasted below the HijackThis Log as well as the Combofix Log. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read, so in notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap

Please proceed with the Combofix steps posted here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Hello miekiemos,

Thanks for your reply. I re-ran Combofix as you requested, and re-formatted the HijackThis log. Both logs are copied below. My computer has improved overnight, but still continues to have significant probems. Look forward to your reply. Thank you..

Hi,

The HijackThislog you posted is an older one. You were supposed to post a new HijackThislog made after the Combofixscan.

Anyway,

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

Folder::
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\ouii
C:\Windows\ouii
C:\Program Files\Drmupgds
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nGpxx01
C:\Temp

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{E180F496-8A4B-44E2-9FE0-0364E345DB7F}]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"ouii"=-
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run]
[hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shellexecutehooks]
"{E180F496-8A4B-44E2-9FE0-0364E345DB7F}"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\efcdaba]

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Posted Image

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog (made after you performed the step with CFScript)

Hi,

Sorry I misread about sending a new HijackThis. In any event, I've ran Combofix with the Notepad file you sent, and then ran a new HijackThis log. Both logs are below. My computer is running much better even since yesterday. Thanks.

Hi,

Since you were also dealing with older infections which didn't display in your Combofix log (since they are at least older than 2/3 months).. I suggest you install an additional Antispyware scanner to get rid of the leftovers. But first..

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • For Platform, select "Windows"
  • For language, select your language
  • Read the License agreement and then Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement".
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Then, * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Then, Download and install Superantispyware
  • Load Superantispyware and click the check for updates button.
  • Once the update is finished click the scan your computer button.
  • Check Perform Complete Scan and then next.
  • Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
  • Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
  • Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
  • It could be possible that it will ask you to reboot your computer in order to delete some files after reboot.
  • I'll need a log afterwards of what has been found.
  • To get the log, Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.
  • Post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Hello miekiemoes,

I downloaded and installed the new Java, uninstalled the old one, uninstalled Combofix, and then downloaded and ran Superantispyware. I've pasted the Superantispyware below. Thank you.

Hi,

Is this the complete log? Because it looks like a part was cut off below. So look in your original log and post the rest in a next reply if present.

Hello,

This is the complete log. I looked at the Notepad file I had saved, and also went back in to Superantispyware and viewed the log again, and they both ended just like the one I posted.

Hi,

Things are MUCH improved from a couple days ago. Internet Explorer is running with OK speed, and it doesn't open any windows on its own anymore. The machine seems to be back to its normal function. Let me know if there's anything else you think I need to do to clean up any lingering leftovers. Otherwise, thank you very much for your help, I really appreciate it. My computer has been getting pretty worn out, and I was starting to think I might have to let it go.

Glad I could help.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
