This is my second try. My computer is so compromised, just clicking on the Spellcheck below took my to www.likesurfing.com/search and then trying to post my HJT brought up a Microsoft message that wiped the screen!

I have tried everything, safe mode, etc., etc., using several spyware programs, but I can't get ahead of this malware.

Thanks for any help or advice you can give. Fleur

I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {85CBFDE0-B26B-4EE5-BD3C-4DE111DE763E} - C:\WINNT\System32\winnet.dll

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-A3FA-F363B384B77D} - (no file)

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode and delete the following files:

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)
C:\WINNT\System32\winnet.dll

Disable System Restore. You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore
or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Thank you. I have done as you asked, but that file will not disappear. I checked it in the scan, but it shows up in the next scan after rebooting.

However, even before your last message, my computer seems to be working OK again, no funny messages, no hijack tries, etc.

Here is my latest scan. Is this "R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = " file legitimate?

Thanks for your help. Fleur

That entry does not hurt at all. I just like to remove it and see if anything pops up again.

Now that you are clean, please follow this simple step and use the following programs:

Visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure that you have the latest patches for your operating system installed. If there are new updates to install, install all the critical updates, reboot and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

I would strongly advise you download and install SpywareBlaster and Spybot (With TeaTimer)

Tutorials and download locations for each programs can be found below. They will help to prevent a lot of future reinfections.

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your web browser

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware from Your Computer

Glad i was able to help.

Thank you so much for your help. I certainly have learned a whole lot in recovering from these problems I had.

I appreciate your advice, but please note that I have been doing EVERYTHING you mention, critical updates, Sybot, AdAware, Spyblaster, Norton AV and firewall, etc. for months now and still got into this problem, albeit because "someone" in my household went surfing where he should not have been! What really started all this was that the hacker was able to stop my firewall without my knowing. I now keep the firewall icon right out in the open so I know immediately if it is "x'd" out.

Also, I have installed BHODemon and have found that to be very helpful.

Thanks again for your kind help.

Certain features of Spywareblaster should be run from each user account on the machine. THis is because some of the settings changed with spywareblaster are only configured for the particular user, and not the whole machine. Unfortunately Spyware sometimes targets the entire machine and not the particular user.

LKog into each account on your computer and make sure you run spywareblaster from that account , tightening the restrictions and protecting IE.
