shut down error

i have a problem with my laptop. i am running xp home. when i have been on the computer for a while, everything freezes then turns off. no shut down procedure, just turns off. i have to put an object under the laptop and this some how works. it is a pain as the computer wobbles and it is hard to control the keyboard and mouse. is there another way to resolve this problem or do i have a major computer brek down? please help..

It sound like your laptop is getting to hot and this will cause it to shut off
