Just to add there my system seems to slowly be getting worse the, the length of time at startup has gotten longer and longer and I am now at the point that explorer seems not to run and the only way to get it to work is through the task manager.

Hello McDuff73,

I apologise for the delay. The forum is too busy.
-----------------------------------------
RENAME HIJACKTHIS

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to scanner.exe and post back a new Hijackthis log.

Hello McDuff73,
  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any question or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.
-----------------------------------------------------
You are very badly infected with a Vundo variant which replaces legit programs.
If needed you will need to re-install some.
-----------------------------------------------------
Your mIRC is wrongly installed. You have the executable file in the uninstaller.
Does it work properly? If not uninstall mIRC via add/remove programs , but wait untill we finish cleaning your pc and then you can install it again.
-----------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.
-----------------------------------------------------
Post back:
Combofix report.
A new HijackThis log.

Combofix log as follows it took less than five minutes and seems to have re-installed IE as I thought I had uninstalled it as I use firefox.

Since your mIRC is working ok you can leave it like that.
In case it creates any problem to you in future, uninstall and re-install it.

  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
------------------------------------------------------
After following the above steps, please check via add/remove programs, if you still have the following programs on your pc:MSN Messenger
Eraser

If they are missing after we finish cleaning your pc you will have to re-install them.
They were badly infected.

Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Using Internet Explorer Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/d...kavwebscan.html and click the Accept button at the end of the page.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
  • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
  • Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
  • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Both MSN and Eraser are still present on my pc

as soon as Kaspersky has re-run I will try and locate and save a log to post.

Pc is now running without any pop ups and IE is no longer starting on its own but this has been the case since after the first bout of cleaning was performed

Hello McDuff73,

Regarding Kaspersky scan, maybe you missed this step.
*When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
----------------------------------------------------
If you are having a hard time with Kaspersky and not able to save a report, try this one:

PANDA ONLINE SCAN
Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log.
----------------------------------------------------

name of a file submitted for checking :- C:\Documents and Settings\William\Desktop.\[4]-Submit_2008-02-17@10.59.zip

So i suppose it was sent. Thanks
----------------------------------------------------
Waiting for the on-line scan and a new HijackThis log.
I am glad those 2 programs are still there
