Got all applications (that I know of) shut off before I defrag. Defrag restarts time and again until I get the message it has restarted 10 times. How do I find out what's running in the background that keeps writing to the hard drive?

Try running scandisk and defrag in Safe Mode, which will only use the most essential programmes so others will not keep accessing the files being defragged. Just tap on the f8 key whilst booting, and you will get to Safe Mode.
