I stupidly opened an exe containing a virus. :( Norton 2007 said it stopped trojan.vundo and trojan.metajuan but I'm not sure it really did. Started getting odd redirects and sites launched in IE which I think may have brought additional viruses. Tried to remove with norton again and found nothing. Tried housecall online, found others 2 others which it cleaned. Downloaded Kaspersky full version, found and cleaned multiple listings starting with BHO... Ran Ad-aware and came up clean. Recently still getting "Metajuan" and "Downloader" norton warnings, but indicates they've been blocked.

I've followed the procedures in the pinned forum. Lately, Kaspersky online reports I'm clean but running Spybot S&D in safe mode finds Virtumondo on first scan. I cleane, rebooted again to safe mode and scan again and it comes up clean with S&D. However, behavior continues. Removed housecall and Kaspersky full version. Spybot, norton, and ad-aware still on system.

Also on boot into windows, I get 3 pop up notifications. 2 indicate can't find oddly named dll files in my c:\\users\phil\appdata\local\temp folder (ljjhghe.dll and geffc.dll) and the final saying "missing entry: run" in aicfqbrg.dll. I'm guessing these are remnants of some that were removed? Please help... literally my brand new PC, trying to fix for last 5 days myself without luck. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum pempey
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Your version of Sun Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Sun Java, and then update.
1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
2. Scroll down to where it says 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4'.
3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
4. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
5. The page will refresh.
6. Click on the link to download 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' and save to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Click Start and choose Control Panel:
- In Control Panel double click on the "Programs and Features" icon.
- Here you can find all the programs and items which are installed in Windows Vista.
- Now remove all older versions of Sun Java.
9. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
10. Click the Change/Remove button.
11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
12. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
13. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Please disable UAC [User Account Control].
1. Click Start and then click the picture at the top of the right column on the Start menu, this opens the User Accounts Control Panel.
2. Click Turn User Account Control on or off,you will have to respond to a UAC prompt to complete this action.
3. Clear the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box and click OK.
4. Click Restart Now when prompted, after your computer restarts,UAC will be off.
You can repeat these steps to re-enable UAC,just click to select the check box in Step 3 when we've finished.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.
Warning
You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert,NOT for private use.
Using this tool incorrectly could render your system/pc inoperable.

Now download Combofix by sUBs and save to your desktop.
Alternative Combofix download link HERE.
Note
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.
Note
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

First, Richie thank you so much for responding and offering assistance. It is greatly appreciated. I really hope to fix this.

I completed all your steps down to running combofix but then encountered an issue. When I double click on the icon on my desktop, it opens a window labeled "Administrator" with a blue background. The text says:

Please wait.
Combofix is preparing to run.

Then a second or so later says:

Out of memory.

and stops there.

I've tried to run a few times (rebooting and deleting all combofix folder on C:\ between attempts) with the same error. Do you know what causes this... Am I missing something? Machine is brand new with 4 gig of memory. Is this Vista compatable? I couldn't find a reason for this error in this forum. Thanks again.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
* Close all other windows before proceeding.
* Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
* When it has finished, DSS will open two Notepads: main.txt and extra.txt
* Use Save As to save both Notepad files to your Desktop and post them in your next reply.

Disable Windows Defender's real-time protection,as it may interfere.
* Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start>All Programs>Windows Defender.
* Click on 'Tools'>'Options'.
* Under 'Real-time protection options', unselect the 'Turn on real-time protection' check box
* Click 'Save'.

Please disable Spybot S&D’s protection,or it will interfere.
You can enable it after you're clean.

Open Spybot and click on 'Mode' and check 'Advanced Mode'.
Click on 'Tools' in bottom left hand corner.
Click on the 'System Startup' icon.
Uncheck 'Teatimer' box and/or uncheck 'Resident'.
Click the 'Allow Change' box.
Then, check next to the computer clock to see if the icon for Spybot is still there.
If it is, right click it and choose 'exit Spybot-S&D Resident'.
Restart the computer.

That TeaTimer is aggressive! Didn't realize it when it was turned back on it could retroactively catch things edited while it was shut off! I shut it off per your instructions first. Rebooted. Ran Registry Fix. Rebooted. Turned it back on. Rebooted. It gave me a bunch of TeaTimer warnings.... I blocked them. Turned out it was the for the fixes that occurred when it was shut off. Repeated all procedures (redoing fix) and this time allowed the 5 registry deletions. System seems noticeable better on bootup... no more rundll32.exe popups! Thanks!!! I still haven't dared to open IE yet as that's where the odd behavior manifested itself.

Here's the current HJT log:

Click Start/Control Panel
Double click on the "Programs and Features" icon.
Here you can find all the programs and items which are installed in Windows Vista.
Now remove Spybot Search and Destroy, then reboot.
We can reinstall it later.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune:
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
Do not run it just yet.

Download\install 'SuperAntiSpyware Home Edition Free Version' from here:
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE

Launch SuperAntiSpyware and click on 'Check for updates'.
Once the updates have been installed, exit SuperAntiSpyware.
Do not run it just yet.

Now double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click 'Select All' found at the bottom of the list.
Click the 'Empty Selected' button.

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
Click Firefox at the top and choose 'Select All' from the list.
Click the 'Empty Selected' button.
NOTE:
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click 'No' at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser,do this also:
Click Opera at the top and choose 'Select All' from the list.
Click the 'Empty Selected' button.
NOTE:
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click 'No' at the prompt.
Click 'Exit' on the Main menu to close the program.

Now Start SuperAntiSpyware.
On the main screen click on 'Scan your computer'.
Check: 'Perform Complete Scan'.
Click 'Next' to start the scan.

Superantispyware will now scan your computer, when it's finished it will list all/any infections found.
Make sure everything found has a checkmark next to it,then press 'Next'.
Click on 'Finish' when you've done.

It's possible that the program will ask you to reboot in order to delete some files.

Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:
Click on 'Preferences'.
Click on the 'Statistics/Logs' tab.
Under 'Scanner Logs' double click on 'SuperAntiSpyware Scan Log'.
It will then open in your default text editor, such as Notepad.
Copy and paste the contents of that report into your next reply.
Also post a new Hijackthis log,let me know how your pc is running now.

Got 2 vundo warnings from symantec auto-protect since yesterday's fixes. Said both were blocked. Rundll32 pop-ups gone. Followed your instructions. First scan with Superspyware came back bad... multiple vundo and a downloader. I guess they weren't blocked or were old infections. Log below. It rebooted to clean. Re-ran. Found nothing. Not sure if I can expect that this means it was got rid of it... the super spyware software forums suggest vundo isn't always removed. Both logs follow, then the HJT log as requested. Thanks again.

Followed instructions and generated new log. I really haven't started using internet on this PC beyond just long enough to run these procedures until was clean. What are your thoughts? Does it look good? Do you think vundo is really gone? If so, what would you recommend I run longterm for protection (Norton, Spybot, SUPERAntispyware...?). My first ever virus issue in 10+ years of PC use (albeit, first vista box). Thanks.

Please download OTMoveIt by OldTimer:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe
Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Click on the 'Cleanup' button Posted Image
When you do this a text file named cleanup.txt will be downloaded from the internet.
If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet you should allow it to do so.
When the 'Confirm' box appears click 'Yes'.
Restart your pc when prompted.

Now please enable UAC by following the instructions above.
