Hi folks,
I have a Dell laptop running XP. It takes 10-15 minutes to start up. When I click on a browser or Outlook Express, it takes another 5-10 minutes to open. Once it's up, though, response time is good. I had been running Windows Firewall and Symantec Anti Virus Corporate Edition. I've just replaced the Windows firewall with Comodo firewall and added Super Anti Spyware. I did all all the pre-work scans as instructed. Symptoms are unchanged. HJT log attached. Thanks for any help you can provide. Gtrgirlz

Hi Richie,
Thanks for responding. I didn't receive an email so didn't know you had posted. I checked my profile to be sure I didn't typo my email address and it is correct. I'm not running a spam blocker so who knows why I didn't get it. Anyway, I checked my post and saw your response. Here is the Hijackthis log:

Your version of Sun Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Sun Java, and then update.
1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
2. Scroll down to where it says 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 4'.
3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
4. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
5. The page will refresh.
6. Click on the link to download 'Windows Offline Installation jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe' [15.12 MB] and save to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
9. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
10. Click the Change/Remove button.
11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
12. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
13. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.
Download Combofix by sUBs and save to your desktop.
Alternative Combofix download link HERE.
Note
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Now close any open browsers.
Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note
Do not mouseclick combofix's window or do anything else on your pc while it's running.
That may cause the program/system to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.
Note
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

I've followed the instructions except Java 6u5 was only available, not 6u4. Attached are the 2 logs.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
Read this article:
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
You are well advised to remove the program now.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present, then restart your pc:
Viewpoint
Viewpoint Toolbar
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting 'Fix checked'.
Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing:

Download and scan with CCleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp
1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free Basic or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
* Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
* Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
* Clean all entries in the "System" section.
* Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
* Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
* Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
* Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
* Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
* Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "Exit" when done.

If your laptop is still slow at startup, and you have the Symantec AntiVirus installation cd,try uninstalling/reinstalling the program.
If there is no uninstaller available in Add\Remove Programs then you will need to download and run the Norton Removal Tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...005033108162039
*Please Note*
The Norton Removal Tool will remove all Norton/Symantec products from your pc.

If still no joy try the following.
Download/install Codestuff Starter:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/starter.html

Disconnect from the internet.
Launch Starter, then under the 'Startups' tab uncheck everything down the left hand side.
Restart your laptop.
Now start re-checking each box, restart your laptop after each one.
Keep on doing that to see if there's any particular program/process thats causing your slow startup issue.
Note:
Before reconnecting to the internet make sure your firewall and antivirus are both running.

Post a new Hijackthis log,let me know how your laptop is running now.

Hi Richie,
I did everything you asked. When I uninstalled Symantec AV and installed the latest version provided by my employer, startup seemed to speed up. Then I did the ccleaner sequence. When I removed all programs from startup, it only took 4 minutes to start up. As I replaced the start up programs, one by one, startup time slowly crept up to 10+ minutes. I noticed the disk drive chugging away for a full 15 minutes. So I opened task manager. The 1st process is Doscan which seems to use a lot of memory. Is this a scan running upon startup? It disappears once the disk stops chugging. I can't find a setting in SAV that says scan upon startup but I suspect that is the program doing the scan. I've only recently added SuperAntiSpware and Comodo and the laptop was slow to start before that. I ran HJT while the disk was chugging and also once it stopped. Both logs are attached below. I run SAV, Super AntiSpyware and Comodo on my other PC with no problems. Maybe it's too much for this laptop to handle? If so, do you have a suggested alternative to SAV Corporate Edition?

I noticed the disk drive chugging away for a full 15 minutes. So I opened task manager. The 1st process is Doscan which seems to use a lot of memory. Is this a scan running upon startup? It disappears once the disk stops chugging. I can't find a setting in SAV that says scan upon startup but I suspect that is the program doing the scan.

See if the registry fixes in the link below help.
DoScan.exe causes high CPU usage:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-s...005042710304248

Maybe it's too much for this laptop to handle? If so, do you have a suggested alternative to SAV Corporate Edition?

Try this freeware option, download Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic:
http://www.free-av.com/

Disconnect from the internet.
Remove/uninstall Symantec,then reboot.
Install Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic.

Let me know how you get on.

Hi Richie,
I replaced SAV with Avira. That seems to have done the trick. Thanks for all your help.

Click on Start/Run,copy and paste ComboFix /u into the 'Open:' space, then press Ok.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore.
