Hi Richie

Since I last posted, my computer crashed ..... got the dreaded blue screen of death that stated no bootable disk .... had to reformat the hard drive and reload windows.

I'm running AVG 7.5 free edition .... in every scan it lists changes to:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernel32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\user32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Are these okay?

System seems to be running fine. I'm concerned about opening anything on my external hard drive. I've scanned it with AVG and it finds nothing. Is there anything else that I can do to check it?

Thanks for your help.

I'm running AVG 7.5 free edition .... in every scan it lists changes to:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernel32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\user32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

This is a bug with AVG7 Antivirus.
First enable the viewing of hidden files and folders, reverse the process once you've done below:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-see-hidden-files-in-windows/

Now find the file avg7qt.dat and delete it.
AVG7 will then rebuild with your current system data and stop reporting these files as changed.

Your version of Sun Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Sun Java, and then update.
1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
2. Scroll down to where it says 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 4'.
3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
4. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
5. The page will refresh.
6. Click on the link to download 'Windows Offline Installation jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe' [15.12 MB] and save to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
9. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
10. Click the Change/Remove button.
11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
12. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
13. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Please disable Spybot S&Ds protection,or it will interfere.
You can enable it after you're clean.

Open Spybot and click on 'Mode' and check 'Advanced Mode'.
Click on 'Tools' in bottom left hand corner.
Click on the 'System Startup' icon.
Uncheck 'Teatimer' box and/or uncheck 'Resident'.
Click the 'Allow Change' box.
Then, check next to the computer clock to see if the icon for Spybot is still there.
If it is, right click it and choose 'exit Spybot-S&D Resident'.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.

Now download Combofix by sUBs and save to your desktop.
Alternative Combofix download link HERE.
Note
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Do not run it just yet.

Now please go here and follow the instructions to install the Recovery Console:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Now close any open browsers.
Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note
Do not mouseclick combofix's window or do anything else on your pc while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.
Note
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Clear your 'System Restore' points by doing the following:
Right-click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'.
Select 'System Restore'.
Select 'Turn Off System Restore On All Drives'.
Select 'Apply'.
You will then get the following warning:
"You have chosen to turn off System Restore.
If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track or undo changes to your computer.
Do you want to turn off System Restore?".
Then select 'Yes',your 'System Restore' directories will be purged.

Restart your pc.

Turn 'System Restore' back on:

Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'.
Select 'System Restore'.
Unselect 'Turn Off System Restore On All Drives'.
Select 'Apply',then click 'Ok'.

Click on Start/Run,copy and paste ComboFix /u into the 'Open:' space, then press Ok.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe again to run it.
Click on the 'Cleanup' button Posted Image
When you do this a text file named cleanup.txt will be downloaded from the internet.
If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet you should allow it to do so.
When the 'Confirm' box appears click 'Yes'.
Restart your pc when prompted.

Start up is even slower .....

Try the following.
Disconnect from the internet.
Click on Start>Run,type msconfig then press Enter.
Under the 'Startup' tab uncheck EVERYTHING,then reboot.
If everything seems to be back up to speed, start adding items/entries back by rechecking the boxes one at a time.
Reboot in between each one.
Using trial and error, keep doing that until you find the problem program/process.
*Note*
Don't forget to make sure your antivirus and firewall are running before you reconnect to the internet.

Let me know how you get on.

Still slow on start up .....

It started happening after installing recovery console

Dell screen comes right up, then the screen to start windows or the recovery console comes up and that's when the screen goes black for about 1 minute, then the windows screen opens and the screen goes black again before the desktop opens and programs are loaded.

This was still happening after taking all programs out of startup.

Do I need to keep the recovery console installed if I have the windows disks?

I also need help with my son's computer when we're finished with this one. Should I start a new post or continue here?

Thanks for all your help and by the way Happy Valentine's Day!!

No but its certainly handier to have it installed.
If you want to remove it,follow these steps.
