Are you getting a specific error?
Have you tried reinstalling it then uninstalling it?

which version of adaware are you attempting to run?

there are to my knowledge TWO main versions

adaware SE which has now been withdrawn and Adaware 2007; the latter does seem to be giving some folks the run around

Yes. I am getting an error report that reads:

System error 1814 has occurred. Description: Could not login to service. Are you running the application as another user? Application terminates.

I am using Adaware 2007.

What can I do?

Shut the computer completely down and restart. Does the error still occur?
If so, I'd suspect an infection has taken over the AdAware process.
