I am having to repost due to the fact that my version of HJT was old. I am trying to clean out system of over 30 infections and have for the most part been successful till now. I have run AVG spyware, Adaware, Spybot, Stinger, mcafee rootkit detector among others. After reading several of the post in order to remove other infections I am now ready to follow your instructions to the letter. Thank you in advance. Roger

Forgot the HJT log

Hello rdt63,

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player‚‚‚¨‚„Ęs components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. Please let me know about that in your next reply.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall.

Extra-Note: Please, DO NOT use ComboFix on your own. It is a very powerful tool designed to deal with sophisticated infections and if something goes wrong or you use it incorrectly, you could possibly lose the use of your computer. It is ONLY meant to be used under the direct supervision of a malware removal specialist.

Regards

Ok, moved combofix to the infected unit and shut down all anti-virus, spy and firewall software that I can but I can not get to the task manager to verify. It tells me that I don't have the rights yet I am logged in as Admin. The unit in question is disconnected from ALL outside contact. I will let you know when it finishes. One other thing that I see I forgot to include in the first post was that the file that is infected with Trojan.Qhost.zs is \sol852.txt as noted in the HJT log as: O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\sol852.txt Viewpiont is shutdown but will have to wait till tomorrow to find out about removal. PS I have already informed the units owner about peer-to-peer and I think I have convinced him to forget about this type of file transfer due to its dangers.I plan to install AVG Anti-Spyware, Spybot, Adaware, AVG antiVirus and ZoneAlarm. All Free and then let him decide. 16 hours on my clock and this isn't done yet, this is why I had to ask for help, I am over my head.

IMPORTANT: The above script was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!
  • Save the above as CFScript.txt
  • Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.
  • Posted Image
  • This will start ComboFix again. Upon reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.
  • When ComboFix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed, and read it carefully.
  • With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK.
  • A browser will open. Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file.
Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
In your next reply, please post:
- The results from ComboFix
- The results from SuperAntiSpyware
- A new HijackThis log.

Ok, Combo has run and now running SuperAntiSpyware but won't be able to submit logs till about 6:00pm GMT-6 (Central Time USA)
I have never heard of this spyware solution, how does it compare to AVG Antispy for regular usage?
Thanks,

Hello,

Please empty the recovery folder from Spybot - Search & Destroy:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery <= The contents of this folder

Very Important!

Now, close any open browsers.
  • Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\catchme.zip/symavc32.sys
C:\Documents and Settings\Cesar Rea\Desktop\[4]-Submit_2008-02-01@5.21.zip
IMPORTANT: The above script was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!
  • Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
    Posted Image
  • Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt". Post them along with a new HijackThis log.
Note:Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Please post back:
- A new HijackThis log.
- The results from Combofix.
- The results from Dr.Web cure it
Posted Image
Please do not PM me asking for support.
Please be courteous, polite, and say thank you.
Please post the final results, good or bad. We like to know!

Good job, yours logs are clean

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
    • Posted Image
  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

  • Also visit the Secunia Software Inspector

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
