My computer has been infeceted for about two weeks. I have run every scan and adware remover I know of, including multiple online scans, to no avail. I have just completed all of the steps in your preparation guide.

The trojan is affecting Internet Explorer. I'm running Vista home ultimate with IE 7.06. My computer is fully updated. The symptoms are as follows:

1. When I try to visit web pages in IE, about half the time my browser is hijacked and I'm redirected to an ad page. About half the time the page is an ad for Dr. Protection, with a popup that tries to install some software.

2. When I try to visit a site that has an online scan (Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro) or an adware remover (Lavesoft, etc.), the trojan always hijacks the page. I had to use firefox to obtain the needed scanning software and was only able to run Norton's online scan by finally going through a roundabout backdoor link to their scanner. Any attempt to reach their front page is thwarted. I also get popups to install something called XP Antivirus. Of course I have not done so.

3. The virus has disabled registry editing and the task manager. I have been able to get these accessible again with RRT, but they are again disabled on bootup. Spybot located the registry entries causing the problem and I removed them, but on bootup they return. I've tried doing this through safe mode as well. I'm reasonably good at tracking down trojans but for the life of me cannot locate the executable that's doing this.

4. Other than a lot of tracking cookies and the aforementioned registry entries, Spybot, AdAware, Trend PC Housecall, AVG Anti-Spyware and PC-Cillin have been unable to detect this infection.

I have go over all entries in my task manager and cannot find any suspicious programs. I have done the same with my HiJack this log. I'm pretty sure some of the "search assistant" entries are the problem, and I've removed suspicious ones more than once, but they just come back. Clearly this one is out of my league. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Here is my log:

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum TamraRL
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Your version of Sun Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Sun Java, and then update.
1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
2. Scroll down to where it says 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4'.
3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
4. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
5. The page will refresh.
6. Click on the link to download 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' and save to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Click Start and choose Control Panel:
- In Control Panel double click on the "Programs and Features" icon.
- Here you can find all the programs and items which are installed in Windows Vista.
- Now remove all older versions of Sun Java.
9. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
10. Click the Change/Remove button.
11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
12. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
13. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Please disable UAC [User Account Control].
1. Click Start and then click the picture at the top of the right column on the Start menu, this opens the User Accounts Control Panel.
2. Click Turn User Account Control on or off,you will have to respond to a UAC prompt to complete this action.
3. Clear the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box and click OK.
4. Click Restart Now when prompted, after your computer restarts,UAC will be off.
You can repeat these steps to re-enable UAC,just click to select the check box in Step 3 when we've finished.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.
Warning
You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert,NOT for private use.
Using this tool incorrectly could render your system/pc inoperable.

Now download Combofix by sUBs and save to your desktop.
Alternative Combofix download link HERE.
Note
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.
Note
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Thank you!

I have uninstalled all versions of SunJava and installed the new version as instructed. I disabled user account control and attempted to run ComboFix. I had a lot of trouble running combofix as it kept returing an error ("Access violation at..."). Disabling my virus checker did not help. A tip I found online suggested running it in safe mode, and this worked. I hope this does not affect the output.

Here is my ComboFix Log:

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune:
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
Do not run it just yet.

Download\install 'SuperAntiSpyware Home Edition Free Version' from here:
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE

Launch SuperAntiSpyware and click on 'Check for updates'.
Once the updates have been installed, exit SuperAntiSpyware.
Do not run it just yet.

You might want to print/copy the following as you need to be in Safe Mode from here on.

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE using the F8 method.
To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options.
Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting 'Fix checked'.
Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing:
O2 - BHO: ALOT eMusic Toolbar - {8260C2B8-E0D1-448a-B062-33D12D468BF0} - C:\Program Files\alot\bin\alot.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDEA2C12-A476-A13C-2B4C-A3BD546315C2} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\System\vd3_sys.dat
O3 - Toolbar: ALOT eMusic Toolbar - {8260C2B8-E0D1-448a-B062-33D12D468BF0} - C:\Program Files\alot\bin\alot.dll
O4 - Global Startup: update.exe
O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1

Ok, I've done all of the things you detailed in your last instructions. The "alot" item probably was okay as I am an emusic subscriber and I have to install that thing to use some of their services, but I removed it anyway just in case.

As to how my computer is running now:

My task manager was still disabled when I rebooted, though my registry editor is now (finally) accessible. I removed the registry entry that was disabling the task manager and it has returnred to my boot menu. I assume it's fixed now as the program that was disabling it seems to be gone. I have used IE to go to symantec.com, mcafee.com, and trend's PC housecall. I was consistently unable to go to these sites without being redirected before. I think my issue is fixed! I'll know for sure in a day. as sometimes it would seem ok for a short time then crop up again.

Thank you so much for your assistance on this matter! It is greatly appreciated and it has reduced my stress considerably. This stupid little trojan has had a significant impact on my work productivity and truly stymied me, as I try to keep my computer very well protected.

I will certainly be sending a donation through the link provided, and will follow up if the problem occurs again.

Tamra

The "alot" item probably was okay as I am an emusic subscriber and I have to install that thing to use some of their services, but I removed it anyway just in case.

Alot_Toolbar is detected by Kaspersky Antivirus as AdWare.Win32.Comet.be

eMusic Toolbar:

Wether you reinstall it or not thats entirely up to you of course.

Your log is clean  ,please do the following:

Click on Start/Run,copy and paste ComboFix /u into the 'Open:' space, then press Ok.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.
