I just purchased a new Dell laptop. I have an additional desktop PC and another Compaq laptop. I've recently posted HiJackThis logs for the Compaq. Apparently I've had browser hijackers on that computer. I'm planning on reformating the HD on that computer.

I want to clean all 3 computers. The below HiJackThis log is from the Desktop computer. I want to clean this computer entirely before reformatting the Compaq. I have followed the above topic before posting this. In case you need the info:

Compaq laptop (Windows XP)
New Dell laptop (Windows Vista)
Desktop (Windows XP)

I plan on using AVG free virus on all 3 computers and Comodo Firewall on all 3 computers. As far as I can tell, these are reasonable options given the combination of XP and Vista.

AVG free and Comodo are now installed on this desktop. All 3 computers are connected to DSL via a Netgear WGT624 router with WPA-PSK. Please advise on how to clean any malware / viruses / browser hijackers on this desktop. Thanks in advance for all of your great help. Chad

Hi cpotter,

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums and thanks again for your patience.

Thanks in advance for the help.

You're very welcome.

1. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Do you know this site? In any case I am a big believer in having nothing in your trusted sites. The only advantage to have a domain in your trusted sites, is that it wont prompt you when installing software. This also means, that if a new exploit comes out where a site can spoof their domain to one that matches one in your trusted sites, then you will never know when they install software on your machine.
As these sites will still be able to install the software on your machine, even if you dont have the O15 entries, by just hitting yes to the prompt, I suggest leaving those empty. If you agree check the following entries as well:

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sbcglobal.net
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.sbcglobal.net

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

2. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

3. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Plattform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "English".
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click "Continue".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
4. Run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Please post the F-Secure report along with a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are running now.

Hi cpotter,

Things seem to be running a little better now.

That's good to hear.

Logs are looking good as well so I think we're getting there.

Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

Please post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know of any complaints.

Hi cpotter,

No problems that I'm aware of.

That's good to hear. Furthermore that looks like a clean log, so I think you're ready to go.

1. Since the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, as well as the folders created by these tools.

2. Remove previous restore points and set a new one to purge any malware that may have been backed up:

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

You may re-enable hidden files now: Open Windows Explorer >Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is unchecked. Also check "Hide protected operating system files" and tick "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders", >Apply then OK.

3. You should now take the time to read and follow the information found in the links below,to help you prevent any possible future infections and stay safe and secure while online:

* Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet!!

* How to prevent Malware!!

* So how did I get infected in the first place!!

Glad I was able to help and if there are any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BleepingComputer Forums, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!

Good luck!
